We recently dined at Galjoen and had an excellent experience. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the service was top-notch. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. We especially enjoyed the presentation of the dishes and the attention to detail in the flavors. I can highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a great dining experience. We can’t wait to return.

We probably had overly high expectations of this restaurant so were unfortunately disappointed with our dining experience. We had to return one of our dishes in the five-course set meal as it was so heavily spiced with chili that it was inedible. The main course of grilled yellowtail lacked any flavor and similarly most of it went back to the kitchen. The only highlight was the desert, which was a version of churros with an ice-cream center which was delicious and inventive. We did point out our unhappiness with the meal and the wait staff were understanding and sympathetic, hence the four stars rating for service. The restaurant ambience is pedestrian. Final comment is that, presumably deliberately, there is no visible sign of the restaurant on the street and, as visitors to Cape Town, it took us some time for find a passerby who gave us directions - not an ideal experience given the security environment.

The food lacked complexity. I expected a blockbuster meal like a seared tuna steak or a sashimi selection of local fish to be included in the menu, but we were served rather limited dishes with limited diversity (for a seafood specialist fine-dining set-up) with singular overpowering tastes. The ambience was cold, average service, no one to greet us by the door with a quiet staircase to walk down with simple A4 paper printed signs pasted on the walls indicating where the restaurant is. It all round lacked the attention to detail one would expect of a fine-dining restaurant like this.
