We had great expectations of this dinner at Jan's. But we were disappointed. We are familiar with fine dining and Michelin star restaurants in Europe. There were only three dishes that were somewhat surprising. However, the cheese buffet was a disaster. You expect a special dish with cheeses from a star chef and not a buffet with cheeses that everyone can eat at home. The idea of a long table with 18 guests is also a challenge. If there is a group at the table who is quite drunk and sets the tone for the evening, it is not always pleasant. All in all, we thought the amount paid was not worth the "experience" and we will not recommend.

It is a very carefully curated experience, from arrival to the manor house for canapes and MCC, to being driven in a 1960's combi to the ancient cottage venue in the lavender fields across the road from La Motte. Very pretty and slick. Dinner was harvest themed with mosbolletjies and grapes set out on the table and each course carefully thought out to fit this theme. The various starters, including the fried grape leave and snoek pate tasty and the main course of duck was delicious, but not mind blowing. The cheese course laid out on a massive groaning table with many preserves and bread is a lovely idea, and delicious but would fit a bistro level experience not a Jan level and priced dinner. It was not much fun fighting your way through the small space and other guests. Maybe our expectations were too high, we specifically came to Franschhoek for this dinner, had booked and anticipated it for a very long time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The staff are fantastic and the whole ambience great. The only complaint I have is the bread and cheese table - I do not feel it belongs in the whole experience . I can buy all the cheeses and the bread and have it at home - in this experience I want every course to be something special made by the chefs

Every course was tasty and well presented, the wines paired with the courses were excellent. The service was top notch with a homely but tasteful ambience. Seating at a long table provide opportunity to get to know fellow patrons which is fantastic.

What a wonderful time we had at Jan‘s. It felt like invited by friends for a fantastic dinner. Everything was just perfect. And sitting on one table with all the other guests makes it even more perfect.
