Post & Pepper: welcome to your new favourite restaurant.
The old Post Office in the university town of Stellenbosch, dubbed SA’s culinary capital, has been respectfully restored and repurposed. It houses a stylish yet laid-back corner restaurant that has a New York, old-school bar feel. Whether you seek a few petite plates or a three-course meal, they’ll pop in your mouth.
The first pop may come from chef Jess van Dyk’s pork lollipops. Or cosset your taste buds with the kerala fish, perfectly steamed and topped with tomato and tamarind jam. The boujee toastie can be called a signature dish, but it does come to the party wearing different outfits. It’s a heavenly combination of a brioche base with a duck parfait topping, delicately dressed. Some dishes, like ‘winter in Amalfi’, are reminiscent of her travels after growing up in Kuruman. The warm orange sponge with citrus marmalade and yoghurt ice cream will satisfy any dessert lover, although it’s not too sweet.
There’s a little of everything on the small menu, with plates for sharing as Jess has FOMO when other people order. “I think people should enjoy the same mouthful and that moment together. There's anything from a bit of South African influence and always a bit of curry somewhere and pasta,” she says. Be guaranteed of big flavours on the a la carte menu or set menu that springs up for season, and attentive service.
