Luke Dale Roberts brings his much-loved Cape Town establishment to Rosebank, Johannesburg, with The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg.
Expect familiar favourites and exciting new dishes to be ordered as guests please and enjoyed as a small plate sharing experience for the whole table.
An energetic, fun atmosphere and a formidable wine and cocktail list will keep diners well entertained.
The Pot Luck Club (PLC) recently made its way to Jozi from Cape Town, where it has been wowing diners since 2012 with its globally inspired small plates packed with big flavours. This new incarnation has already established its own identity. The space is light and airy filled with Japanese-inspired hand-painted flying fish paper lamps by artist Hannelie Coetzee who is also responsible for the the wood etching that runs the length of the restaurant. The bank of chefs in the open kitchen section are young and enthusiastic.
Head chef Ebie du Toit, who started his career with Luke Dale Roberts as a sculler, says that flavours in the Mother City are more subtle while, like the vibrant City of Gold, here they’re bolder and more intense. Some – like the sublime crispy squid served with atchar, a buttermilk dressing and an apricot and crispy curry leaf salad – pay tribute to his Cape Malay heritage.
Aside from the perennial favourite amasi-battered fish sliders, the lush chickpea fries topped with Parmesan and served with whipped goat’s cheese, truffle aioli and smoked tomato sauce and the linefish ceviche tacos, PLC Johannesburg has its own menu and dishes.
There’s an impressive wine list of both local and international wines, with many available by the glass, but do yourself a favour and try the Thai green curry martini, a moreish cocktail made from vodka muddled over chilli, litchi, lemongrass and coconut. It turns up the heat in the most pleasant way.
