Located at 84 Harrington Street, East City Grill & Yakiniku brings two dining concepts
under one roof — a celebration of South African heritage and Asian flair, led by Executive
Chef Jaycee Ferreira.
At East City Grill, Ferreira’s flame-led cooking and local Wagyu define a menu rooted in
South African tradition yet shaped by Asian influence and Cape Town’s modern edge.
Across the room, Yakiniku offers an immersive Japanese-style grill experience inspired by
Tokyo’s smoky yakiniku-ya, where guests cook, share, and connect around the flame.
Housed within a landmark hemp building designed by Wolf & Wolf Architects, it’s two
flames, one destination, and a new rhythm for the city.

We visited Yakiniku at East City Grill expecting a premium dining experience. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing and expensive meals I have had in a long time. The food was average, especially considering the price, but what ruined the evening was the complete lack of consideration for paying guests. During our meal, a self proclaimed influencer, set up a tripod and cameras less than a metre from our table. It was intrusive and made it difficult to relax or enjoy a private conversation over dinner. After I raised the issue with the manager on duty, the tripod was put away, so the immediate problem was resolved. What disappointed me was that I had to raise the issue in the first place. A manager should be aware of what is happening on the restaurant floor. It should not fall on paying guests to point out something so obvious. The manager’s initial response was to offer to move us to another table, even though we had been seated first. While the situation was eventually corrected, I expected management to recognise the problem immediately and address it without placing the burden on the customer. For the price we paid, I expected far better awareness and customer service. This was one of the most expensive dinners I have had in a long time, and unfortunately one of the least enjoyable. I will not be returning.

Hi Kobus, thank you for your honest and detailed feedback. I'm very sorry that your experience was overshadowed by something that should have been managed differently without offending any of our dinners. Dining with us should be about enjoying great food and spending quality time with the people you're with, not having distractions become part of the evening. We appreciate you raising the matter with us, and your comments have given us something important to think about. Thank you for visiting us, and all the best.

This beautiful city spot combines sleek interiors with cosy corners and an excellent cocktail menu, making it the perfect place to linger. The Yakiniku Winter Menu was a standout, and cooking each course over the open grill built into our table made for a fun, interactive dining experience. We'll definitely be back to sample the à la carte menu. Oh and the egg fried rice – hands down the best in the city!

Yakiniku at East City Grill responded on Wed 15 Jul 26:
Hi Julie, thank you so much for spending the evening with us and for such generous feedback. It's incredibly rewarding to know you enjoyed the experience from beginning to end. Our team puts a lot of care into creating something that's a little different, so it's wonderful to know it resonated with you. We can't wait to welcome you back for another evening around the grill.

Great food feeds your stomach. Great restaurants feed the conversation. This place did both. We barely touched our phones.

Absolutely incredible. The service, the experience was next level and the quality of the food/meat was exceptional. Far beyond our expectations. Ive travelled the world and eaten in some of the best michellin restaurants in Hong kong, Spain, London. This was definitely my top 3 out of all of them. Great for kids as well. Best fathers day . Definitely try it out

Disappointing meal! We arrived at the restaurant and were taken to our table. We sat there for about 10 minutes without anybody coming to take a drinks order. Eventually my husband had to go to the bar and ask for a waiter to serve us. (apparently there was a misunderstanding and nobody knew we were at the table!) The menu states that you will be served 200 g sirloin, instead we were served about 100 g sirloin and 100 g brisket which was to share amongst two people. The brisket was so tough it was in edible. The menu also says six prawns which were to share amongst two people. Also know that there is a 12, 5% tip automatically added to our bill for2 people ( whether service was good or bad)

Yakiniku at East City Grill responded on Tue 16 Jun 26:
Hi Vicky, thank you for your feedback and I’m truly sorry that your visit left you disappointed. It sounds like we missed the mark from the very beginning with the delay in greeting and service, and I completely understand how frustrating that must have been. I also hear your concerns around the portions and menu expectations. This is not the experience we want for our guests, and we will be looking into it carefully with the team.
