Donkiesbaai Seafood and Sushi

We went to Donkiesbaai for dinner last Friday to celebrate my best friend’s birthday, and unfortunately, the experience was not quite what we had hoped for. When we arrived, the first seating area we were given was really unpleasant — we were seated near the takeaway coach, so we asked if we could be moved. Thankfully, the staff accommodated us and moved us to another area. Unfortunately, as the evening went on, the experience became increasingly disappointing. My friend ordered fish with vegetables as her main course, but the fish was raw in the middle and had to be sent back. Her starter, the calamari, was also slightly burnt and had an unpleasant aftertaste. Towards the middle and end of the evening, we also started to feel as though the staff were rushing us to leave. Around 10pm, it became quite obvious that the restaurant was preparing to close. Near the kitchen area, a long table had been set up with pots, pans and plates being stacked, and the staff were clearly busy with closing-up preparations. While I completely understand that restaurants need to close and staff need to finish their shifts, seeing everything being packed away while we were still dining made the atmosphere feel rather uncomfortable and certainly didn't feel like the relaxed birthday dinner we had hoped for. There were some positives — we appreciated that our seating request was accommodated — but overall, considering this was a birthday celebration, the evening unfortunately fell short of expectations. The food issues and the feeling of being rushed towards the end really affected the overall experience. I honestly expected more and left feeling quite disappointed.
