Rita's on Kloof

I hosted my 30th birthday celebration at Rita’s for 24 guests. While I had a great evening overall and appreciated the venue and ambience, the experience was unfortunately let down by poor communication, service and manners. I originally booked for 25 guests and later amended this to 24, yet I was still charged a deposit for 25. Two days before the event, I was informed that I was expected to essentially pre-order food for all 24 guests. This was never communicated when I made the booking or paid the deposit. With only two days’ notice, it was impossible to get everyone’s orders in. I still tried to assist by emailing a list of popular small plates so the kitchen could prepare accordingly. However, managing stock for a large booking should be the restaurant’s responsibility. When we arrived, we were presented with a selection of food chosen by the restaurant rather than our guests. I specifically asked for the plates to be brought out gradually, but almost all the food was served within an hour, before all my guests had arrived. By the time the last guests arrived, most of the food had been served. This made splitting the bill difficult, as guests were unable to order their own food as planned, and additional food had to be ordered due to confusion. The biggest disappointment came around 9pm, when my guests were very rudely told to leave because another group had a 9pm booking. This had never been communicated to me beforehand or on the day. Four guests were so offended that they simply left. While the rest of us were dancing, one waiter also threw all my gift bags onto a friend sitting at the table, which was completely unnecessary and disrespectful. I understand that restaurants have time constraints and other bookings, but these expectations should be clearly communicated beforehand, and guests should always be treated respectfully. Sadly, what should have been a special milestone celebration was left with a real damper due to the poor communication and service.

It's a much younger crowd but the overall experience is amazing, I enjoyed the spicy jalapeno margarita and the tacos, it was so good!
