Chard Grill & Wine Bar is a bespoke establishment in the Village Square on the famous Hermanus waterfront.

While meat eaters have come to accept the view that a good steak has to be one of the traditionally tender and juicy cuts, at Chard the emphasis is on unusual and innovative cuts of beef as well as the old time classics.

Supplied by artisan butchers who are following the modern global trend to utilise as much of the carcass as possible, these new wave, alternative cuts are no longer flying under the radar and are presenting diners with a whole new culinary experience.

    Food Poisoning warning! Me and my wife visiting South Africa for our honeymoon and we stopped off at Hermanus. We ate here on 3rd November, as it was so highly rated and all the meats looked incredible. The menu speaks about how high quality all their ingredients are, so we really trusted this would be an ok place to eat. We had the steak tartare and the aged short caveman rib. Needless to say, the next three days were pretty awful. It was our honeymoon but we were stuck in our hotel room. I've never been so sick from food poisoning in my life. I ended up having to get drip & antibiotics after day 3 from a local hospital. It really ruined the end to a once in a lifetime trip to South Africa, we missed many of our plans because of this. I'm sure burgers and stuff like that are fine from here - but please think twice before being adventurous the menu - even though they brag about how high quality everything is. It could really ruin your holiday!!

    We’re truly sorry to hear that you fell ill during your honeymoon — that’s an incredibly unfortunate experience, and we completely understand how upsetting it must have been, especially during such a special trip. We’d like to clarify that foodborne illnesses can set in anywhere from 2 hours up to 72 hours after eating, and without laboratory testing, it’s unfortunately impossible to determine the exact source. Since your visit, we have served hundreds of guests and have not received any similar reports. At Chard, we take food safety extremely seriously. All of our ingredients are sourced from reputable suppliers and handled according to strict hygiene standards, especially with items such as steak tartare, which require meticulous preparation and refrigeration controls. We’re very sorry that your honeymoon was disrupted and hope that you have since made a full recovery.     While our „wet“ ribeye was excellent we were underwhelmed by the dry aged. That was a bit on the chewy side. Other than that: excellent service
