While we had an amazing service in the front and when we arrived, once we were seated to paint our items no one actually came to explain to us what to do, how to follow etc. There were a number of tables who arrived after us though who received the information.

I absolutely love going to the Clay Cafe however I felt the one in the city isn't the best reflection of the franchise. I felt the staff weren't as interested in explaining the procedure as well as the paint is very disorganized. The room where you select your dropper paints have no colour chart making you walk up and down between the rooms on the lower floor, the paint and colour chart is between 2 tables which makes it awkward to stand there by people's tables and none of the dropper colours are in order plus most colours aren't available. I sat on balcony seating where the weight of our table was uneven causing the top to tilt and almost come off. The cover for the sun doesn't do anything and I cooked the entire 3 hours I was there. I absolutely love the clay cafe but would recommend the Hout Bay branch instead - the one in the city seems very all over the place.

Clay Cafe in the City responded on Mon 01 Jun 26:
Thank you for your feedback, and for your continued support of Clay Café, we really do appreciate it. The City branch is quite different from our other locations, particularly Hout Bay. Spatially, it is our smallest branch and is spread across two levels, which can make the flow feel a bit less straightforward at times. Our paint station is positioned as centrally as possible within the space, and while our dropper bottles offer a wide variety of colours, they don’t include the full range of 78 paints available across the brand. Colour charts are available upstairs by the tools table, although we understand that this may not have been clearly communicated on the day. In terms of the balcony, the blinds can be adjusted to provide more shade, our team is always happy to assist with this, so please do feel free to ask when visiting. We’ll also take note of your comment regarding the table and ensure this is checked. We do take your feedback on board, particularly around communication and organisation, as this is something we are always working to improve, especially in a more compact, high-traffic environment like the City branch. We’re glad you enjoy Clay Café overall and hope to welcome you back again soon.

About 40% of attendees opted out because the venue is not halaal. Staff refer to the establishment as halaal friendly, but is not able to formally describe what halaal friendly means. It is not a formally recognised dietary category.

Clay Cafe in the City responded on Mon 01 Jun 26:
With regards to halaal food, we are not halaal certified; we are halaal friendly, however. This means that we have separate ovens and prepare your food using allocated knives, boards, pans, pots, etc. We do understand that this doesn't work for everyone. We will allow our halaal guests to bring in their own plate of food/ we can order online from Mr D or Uber Eats for them. Please talk to us as we are more than willing to accommodate this request. I apologsise that this wasn't clearly explained. All staff are having a test on this this week.
