In 1968 the property was acquired by Historical Homes to be restored - later leased as a restaurant. During 2016 the Rupert family initiated a full restoration, today De Volkskombuis operates once again as a restaurant serving patrons within Stellenbosch.

    We had an excellent meal and service all round, the only small criticism is that towards the end of the meal, we felt that the service petered out somewhat - the table was full of empty glassware, water and wine glasses were't topped up - we had to call for more wine at one point, call for desert and ask another waiter to find our waiter to bring the bill.

    Alternatives (omelets and cheese croissants) were made available to the Halaal team members, but when non-halaal members asked for the same option, the waiter refused. Our waiter did not have a name tag thus I am unable to be specific The food was very appetizing and presentation was great.

    Not enough waiters; no manager in sight. Our waiter was friendly and did his best. I had the curry: meat not tender. Carrots raw. Don’t think the kitchen staff know how to make a stew. Waited forever for drinks. Not the waiter’s fault; just not enough staff. Such a disappointment that such a beautiful venue is managed so badly.
