Nestled at the foot of our majestic mountains, in the leafy suburb of Newlands, Cape Town, Foresters Arms Restaurant and Pub (fondly referred to by the locals as Forries), is one of the oldest pubs in South Africa and provides the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

    This is a landmark and is a greasy place to go. I had the Eisbein for Sunday lunch and it was great. The menu provides a good selection of food. We booked a table in the garden middle sector, on the edge. Great vibe.

    Our booking was made through Dineplan, which required a R400 deposit to secure. Upon completing our meal, our waiter informed us that the R400 would not be deducted from our bill, contrary to what is stated on the Dineplan app, because a bucket of Castle Light had been provided on arrival. The waiter specifically told us that the bucket was “complimentary.” When we raised the issue with the manager, he said we should have been added to a WhatsApp group outlining our options of either water, Coke, or Castle Light. However, no one in our party was ever added to such a group. When we explained this, the manager responded that it was not his problem and walked away. When asked for his name, he refused to provide it and encouraged another manager to give a false name. We later learned from another waitress that his name is Lorenzo. We had no issue paying the bill in full and included a gratuity of over 10%. Our only concern was to highlight that the Dineplan booking did not clearly explain how the deposit would be handled.
