The House of JC Le Roux is the leading home of sparkling wine in South Africa and offers an exquisite setting to explore the range of crisp, lively and refreshing sparkling and Méthode Cap Classique wines.

The cellar and vineyards nestle on part of the historic farm where French Huguenot, Jean le Roux, planted vines in Stellenbosch after fleeing Normandy in 1704. In 1982 The House of JC Le Roux was established as South Africa’s first dedicated sparkling wine cellar.

We visited JC Le Roux Tasting Room recently and the sparkling wine was genuinely very good, as was the overall value for money. Unfortunately the service was some of the worst I’ve experienced in the Winelands. Our waiter appeared exactly three times the entire visit: once to take the order, once to drop the drinks, and once to bring the bill. For the rest of the time he was completely absent. Our table ended up covered in 12 empty glasses, which eventually led to one being knocked over. Only then did another waiter step in, clear the mess, and apparently go downstairs to fetch our actual waiter — who was too busy laughing and joking with his colleagues instead of doing his job. The bill came to R380. My partner wanted to leave zero tip because the service was so poor. As someone who has worked in hospitality, I know how tough the industry can be, so I insisted we add R50. That was already more than he deserved. What happened next is unforgivable: he quietly added an extra R10 on top of the R50 we specified. I only noticed when I checked my banking notifications at home. He quite literally tipped himself extra without our permission. That single act of dishonesty left a far worse taste than any wine we tried. If they’re willing to do this to locals, I dread to think what unsuspecting foreign tourists are being charged. Beautiful venue, good product, but the service and integrity were an absolute disgrace. Check your bills and the card machine before paying.
