We present Journey, a curated exploration of the Western Cape brought to life on a plate.

Located at Urchin Restaurant in Hyatt Regency Cape Town, this award-winning dining experience celebrates the region’s rich food culture, stories, and heritage. Recognised by the Restaurant Association of South Africa, Journey offers a refined take on Cape Town fine dining.

Led by Chef Marcus Gericke, our team travelled 1,881 kilometres across the Western Cape, from Kalk Bay and the Karoo to the Garden Route and Bo-Kaap, uncovering the flavours and traditions that define this extraordinary region.

The result is a menu that honours over 100 years of Western Cape food culture, reimagined with a contemporary approach.

Guests can choose between an 11-course tasting menu, a full culinary journey featuring signature dishes like our celebrated milk tart, or an à la carte menu including favourites such as the West Coast braai.

    Journey by Urchin was one of the most memorable fine dining experiences we’ve ever had. Every course was beautifully presented, incredibly creative, and absolutely delicious. You can tell how much thought and passion goes into every dish, with each one telling its own story while showcasing exceptional local ingredients. The service was just as impressive - warm, attentive, and perfectly paced, making the entire evening feel relaxed and special. The team made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable dining experience in Cape Town, Journey by Urchin is a must. We left already talking about when we could come back, and we’d recommend it without hesitation.

    Chef Marcus and the team have created a truly beautiful culinary journey around the Weskaap. Each course is created with finesse, flavour and history while reinventing the traditional cuisine in a modern fine dining setting. A special evening experiencing the taste of South Africa!!

    From the moment we stepped through the doors, there was something wonderfully familiar about the experience, despite it being our very first visit. Urchin manages to strike that rare balance between exceptional fine dining and genuine warmth, creating an atmosphere that feels both special and deeply welcoming. We enjoyed the 11-course Journey Experience, and every dish was a showcase of creativity, precision and incredible flavour. What impressed us most was how each course seemed to gently tap into something nostalgic and distinctly South African. Familiar flavours, memories and cultural influences were reimagined with remarkable finesse, creating moments of surprise while still feeling comfortingly familiar. It was storytelling through food at its finest. A special mention to Head Chef Marcus, whose passion and artistry are evident in every detail. The food was exceptional, but what truly set the evening apart was the feeling of hospitality that ran throughout the entire experience. Fine dining can sometimes feel intimidating or formal, but Urchin felt personal, comfortable and sincere. What began as our first visit ended with us feeling as though we had returned to a place we already knew. It was an evening of extraordinary food, heartfelt hospitality and a deeply wholesome experience that we won’t soon forget.

    I wish to express my sincere appreciation for my dining experiences at Urchin. I first visited the restaurant in November 2025 and enjoyed the 9-course tasting menu upon its opening. Since then, I have sampled the entire à la carte urchin menu. I recently returned to experience the 11-course tasting menu, which was exceptional. Chef Marcus Gericke and his team deliver outstanding culinary expertise. Their attention to detail ensures that each guest receives a memorable experience. A particularly commendable aspect of both the 9-course and 11-course tasting menus is the complimentary gift presented at the conclusion of each course. This gesture is thoughtful and fosters a strong sense of connection and appreciation among patrons, creating the impression of being welcomed as part of the Urchin community. The service is professional, seamless, and attentive to detail. The staff are courteous and responsive to the needs of every guest. The quality of the cuisine is outstanding. The opportunity to observe the chefs and to be greeted personally by Chef Marcus Gericke at the table adds significant value to the overall experience. I would rate the establishment 10/10 and I look forward to experiencing their future offerings.
