Award-winning Chef Marcus and our talented team travelled 1,627 kilometres across the province — from the fishing docks of Kalk Bay to the vast plains of the Karoo, along the Garden Route, and back to Cape Town’s treasured Bo-Kaap — researching, tasting, and uncovering the essence of this remarkable region.

Now, Chef Marcus brings 100 years of Western Cape food culture to the table — celebrating the flavours, traditions, and stories that define it.

From the moment we stepped into Urchin Restaurant, nestled within the Hyatt Regency Cape Town, we felt the excitement of an adventurous journey waiting to unfold. The warm, friendly team welcomed us with open arms, already sharing the stories woven into every corner of Urchin. A secret smoke blend tea ritual cocktail appeared, its whispered secrets tantalizing our senses, seducing us into the journey ahead 💖. Every element paid homage to South Africa's treasured traditions - the tea potion paired perfectly with Voorhappie, a snoek, meeboos, curry leaf delight that danced on our taste buds. Chef Marcus Gericke, a master of South African cuisine and _Global Chef Africa & Middle East 2022–23_, _South African Chef of the Year 2024_, greeted us with earthy warmth. His team’s 1,627km road trip from Kalk Bay to Karoo and back to Bo-Kaap inspired a beautifully crafted narrative.
