Situated in the picturesque old-world charm of Kalk Bay’s working harbour, Live Bait has an iconic location. Built on the breakwater, the restaurant has exquisite views overlooking False Bay and the mountains beyond on one side, and the colourful harbour on the other. With a wall of windows, it allows the outside in and creates a breath-taking backdrop to enjoy a meal.

From late July, the Humpback and Southern Right whales come into the bay to calf and are regularly visible to diners. In summer our sun deck allows diners to experience unforgettable outdoor seascapes.

All meals are simply prepared, with an emphasis on fresh flavours of seafood.

    We arrived on time but the waiting staff seemed surprised to see us! We waited for a decent table by the window as requested in the booking. The windows have large gaps in the fittings so if you are going in winter, dress warmly. This is not a warm restaurant! It took a while to place our order -it seemed the other tables warranted more attention. The rolls brought to us were fresh & delicious served with olive oil & balsamic. My prawns were beautifully cooked but lacked the promised garlic & lemony flavours I was looking forward to. Pan fried calamari was apparently delicious! Food prices are up there! But wine prices were reasonable. Choc dessert was decadently delicious. A must if you enjoy chocolate. Overall ambience is disappointing. Staff are not exactly thrilled to be there. Better during the day when you can at least enjoy the dramatic seascape!

    Wonderful spot overlooking the sea with a relaxed sea shack vibe . Best grilled prawns I’ve ever eaten and wonderful sushi too . Seafood pasta wasn’t to our taste though ( too much wine and they’d added Parmesan in the sauce ) but everything else was delicious .
