Food was ok, the small plates are better than the large plates. Wouldn't rush back.

100% miss across the board. Nothing about this experience would make me return. The food quality was below average. Chicken wings tasted like nothing but batter. The tuna dish was indistinguishable from any generic Asian style tuna you can find anywhere. The gnocchi tasted like it had been left in the fryer for days dry, heavy, and unpleasant. The biggest disappointment was the dry-aged steak. We ordered it rare and instead received what tasted like a sous-vide steak that was then left on the grill far too long dry, flavorless, and completely mishandled. Why ruin a quality cut of meat with a sweet sauce? Especially when we explicitly asked for no sauce. Service was equally frustrating. We ordered a single beer and it took 15 minutes to arrive. Yes, the interior looks nice but let’s be honest, it’s inside a Hilton. Décor alone doesn’t make up for poor food and slow service. Overall, not worth the time or money.

I was very eager to try the restaurant as it is the first time I've had a bertus basson dining experience. I was sadly disappointed and am not sure about what the fuss is about. The food was ordinary bordering on strange combinations that were more a crazy concept than a pleasant taste.Sharing small plates of steak tartare was a grey patty of tasteless beef, the chicken wings were a tough slither of white muscle slathered in peanut butter sauce which was the overwhelming flavour. My gnocchi was ordinary, my husband's kalahari rib was mediocre and the furikake French fries were unpleasant. I would be loathe to establish there again - the prices are astronomical for the value

Our second visit wasn't as good as the first. There is a no corkage policy - their prerogative and I should have checked on this beforehand but it was a pity to return home with our special bottle. A good wine list, but hugely and unnecessarily overpriced and the Le Riche Cab 23 at a whopping R800 was too young to be enjoyed. The tuna starter was delicious - but the Ceasar salad bland with no hint of anchovy, the heirloom tomato salad seemed very ordinary not sure if they were even heirloom tomatoes. The tagliata of the chicken dish was overcooked and the Lasagne was really not good. Our waiter was charming but overall the service was patchy - he forgot one of the food items, didn't ask if we were enjoying our meal and when one of the dishes was returned mostly untouched his only comment was to ask if we wanted a doggy bag! On a positive note, the ambiance was great, it is a lively restaurant in a well designed space and wonderful to have a view of the happenings in the kitchen.
