Natasha was a superstar! Food was absolutely phenomenal, would recommend the mussels, flat bread and prawn pasta. Cocktails weren’t up to the standard I was expecting but overall, will absolutely be back!

Second visit to Ongetem and it's a new menu. First visit and it was fabulous. Can they do it again? Let's see..... Wow wow wow. What an experience. From the moment my partner and I walked in, we were treated so well. From the warm and friendly greetings to the amazing cocktails (for my partner), the Nutella milkshake was so delicious, just wow. Our waiter could see that we wanted some alone time which was great as my partner and I hadn't seen each other much recently so it was nice to sit back and chat. But was still present enough that our glasses never ran empty nor did we have to sit with empty plates on the table waiting for clearing (Unathi is a fantastic waiter, highly recommend). Speaking of plates, Wow! From starters to desserts. Just wow. The squid was crunchy and spicy. The smashed marrow while not my favorite dish was still delicious and refreshing (the partner loved it). The pork belly, soft, juicy and that brandy apple. Stuff of dreams. The fillet (ordered rare) was a dream of tenderness and technique. Not many places in Cape Town get a rare steak correct. Its either medium rare or cold in the middle. But Ongetem and the chef on the grill got it right. Then of course dessert, we opted for the peppermint crisp to share which was a wise choice cause at this point we were nearly in a food coma. Such a simple dessert but done to perfection. Creamy, lots of peppermint chocolate and just enough biscuit to add that crunch. My only critique for the night was that I wasn't able to eat more. Will be back to try the rest of the menu.

The food was very nice, but the service was very bad! We got too many people at the table, they were all a bit chaotic, and first we asked for another table, but that was too difficult, with a long story about a waitress who has a lot of tables, it didn't make sense... And then we got a warm bottle of white wine, that problem they solved properly, but it was just too hectic and chaotic, the food was very nice! The restaurant/ hotel it's in a very nice location/ area.

The food was disappointing and far below what one would expect from a restaurant associated with Bertus Basson. It started with the bread, which wasn’t stale but certainly not fresh. The squid was dry and the flavours didn’t work well together. The shrimp cocktail was particularly poor — I understand the intention of an “old school” dish, but it tasted and looked more like something from a local Spar takeaway than a carefully executed plate. The chicken was reasonably tender, but overloaded with butter, which completely overpowered the intended chutney-baked flavour. Very disappointing to say the least.
