Along with formal training in Europe, Chef Nicolene Barrow worked at the world-famous Le Gavroche Restaurant in London before setting up Orangerie at Le Lude. Here classical French cuisine is presented with a contemporary twist; the purist, disciplined approach of the European masters combined with a hint of individual, modern creativity where what is on the plate is presented looking as good as it tastes.

A seasonal menu offers the finest, freshest ingredients found in the forests, meadows, mountains and seas of the Cape, resulting in a selection of dishes offered in an environment conducive to making permanent Franschhoek memories.

    We’ve been coming to Le Lude for years and very much enjoying it, but this time was a big disappointment. The waitresses were as friendly as ever but the service from the male staff was abysmal, even though - unusually - the restaurant was far from full.. They were too busy chatting to one another to pay any attention to the guests, and didn’t bother to look around when they had served dishes at one table to see if any others needed attending to. In the end the guests were having to look out for one another by pointing out that the next table had been trying for ages to get service; then those guests would say the same for the next table etc. My husband enjoyed his sole, which looked moist and tasty. My cheese soufflé - usually excellent - wasn’t great. The “green goddess” dressing swamped the salad and had an unpleasant taste, though the flies evidently liked it and settled in. I ordered a raspberry sorbet but after a while was told that none of the sorbets on the menu was available except for passion fruit or guava. Surely a restaurant should always keep enough in the freezer? And it’s so easy to make, even I can do it! The whole experience was way below the usual standard of Le Lude.
