Disappointing Experience Despite Great Food My husband and I, along with two friends, visited Pink Valley Wines in Stellenbosch for dinner this past Saturday evening. While the food was genuinely enjoyable—we opted for the four-course sharing menu—the overall experience was unfortunately marred by poor service and a lack of hospitality. We were the only table in the restaurant, and rather than being made to feel welcome, we felt rushed from the outset—as though the staff simply wanted us to finish quickly and leave. This despite the restaurant calling earlier in the day to confirm our booking. The dishes served were delicious and thoughtfully presented, which makes it all the more disappointing that the service did not match the standard of the kitchen. The first two courses arrived almost simultaneously, giving us no time to enjoy each one at a reasonable pace. We ended up deliberately slowing down our eating to try and space out the meal. Unfortunately, the service issues didn’t end there. Our waitress spilled wine while topping up glasses—twice— all over the wine glass and the table, with no apology or effort to clean it up. It was clumsy and unprofessional, and we were never even offered a tasting of the wine before it was poured. What really sealed the horrible experience, however, was when—after our third course—the waitress asked if we’d like to have our dessert at the restaurant or take it home, strongly implying that they were eager for us to leave. We were shocked. It felt dismissive and rude, especially considering we had made a reservation and were dining during normal operating hours. If the staff genuinely did not wish to serve a single table that evening, it would have been more respectful to inform us ahead of time, so we could have made alternative plans. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome and disappointed, with what should have been a special evening with friends ending on a sour note.

Lee and his front of house staff were amazing, and made us feel right at home, from when we first walked in the door. All except one course of our meal was fantastic. Sadly, the mussels did not live up to our expectations, despite the sauce being amazing. I tried whitebait for the first time, and we loved the chicken meatballs and the pork belly. The dessert was a first for both of us, and the staff were more than willing to share the recipe with me so I can replicate it at home. The Pink Valley Rose is an excellent wine and perfect for a sunny day.

We enjoyed the Winter Special at Pink Valley. The food was, as always, delicious. What I don't understand, is that their wine list is very limited, and as a South African, very expensive, even for their own wines. Why don't they add more affordable wines from other estates, because then we would definitely visit them more.

We decided to take the winter special, my husband's sirloin was a lot of fat and sinew. The churros were oily. We usually love the tapas, but the menu for tapas was limited. Always loved going here, but this time was very disappointing.
