Protégé is an exciting casual fine dining eatery under the guidance of previous Eat Out Chef of the Year, La Colombe’s Scot Kirton.

Scot is proud to be part of the process of recognising young talented chefs and giving them the opportunity to put themselves on the map. In keeping with this, the restaurant was aptly named Protégé.

The idea with Protégé is to keep it casual and comfortable, working with local suppliers to keep the menu as fresh and as seasonal as possible.

The restaurant space has been designed around the central show kitchen with al fresco dining planned at both ends of the restaurant.

Protégé is open for lunch from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm and for dinner from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm.

    We had a fantastic Chef’s Counter experience! We loved the precision and detail with which the plates were prepared and enjoyed conversations with the chefs and staff. All dishes were utterly delicious however our standout plate was the Korean fried chicken which was so good, we had it twice! The Kriel Chenin blanc which our waiter suggested we try was delightful. This Franschoek restaurant is a must try!

    Completely memorable with imaginative plating and dishes. Staff very knowledgeable and wine list extraordinary. Loved it!

    Sad to say, I was disappointed with Protege. There was little ambience and the food was certainly not the fine dining experience I’d been looking forward to. I had to send my main course back as was so salty, and my partner’s wagyu steak was inedible!

    Our only negative comment would be about the ambience & decor. The decor doesn’t help with the ambience in the restaurant as it felt cold and unwelcoming. Also most tables facing away from the open kitchen - if the point of an open kitchen is so that we can see the chefs at work then this wasn’t happening for most of the tables - in which case why bother ? Usually after a meal people might want to linger and have another drink and soak up the atmosphere but we didn’t feel that this was the case here. The servers were all lovely and enthusiastic about presenting the food. We have eaten here before , and at La Colombe a few times , the food doesn’t disappoint but I feel we’ve had a nicer all round experience at other restaurants.

    Very good experience, staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Chef Willemse has some very good ideas and will develop into a top class chef. We recommend Protégé to anyone looking for an international taste experience. Well done.

    Most of our party of 6 had the Chef's Recommendations Menu. The quality of the food was great and the presentation faultless. My biggest critique is that the food lacked the kind of imagination that I would expect at those prices. I guess you pay inflated prices in Franschhoek... That said, we all had a good time and the outdoor setting was nice enough to sit in for a few hours.
