Protégé is an exciting casual fine dining eatery under the guidance of previous Eat Out Chef of the Year, La Colombe’s Scot Kirton.

Scot is proud to be part of the process of recognising young talented chefs and giving them the opportunity to put themselves on the map. In keeping with this, the restaurant was aptly named Protégé.

The idea with Protégé is to keep it casual and comfortable, working with local suppliers to keep the menu as fresh and as seasonal as possible.

The restaurant space has been designed around the central show kitchen with al fresco dining planned at both ends of the restaurant.

Protégé is open for lunch from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm and for dinner from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm.

Protégé delivers exceptional food, and the broader team offers polished, attentive service. The flavours, pacing, and technical execution were all excellent, and the front of house team carried the evening with professionalism and warmth - Gavin and Trinity. They deserve full credit for that. Gavin, for taking the time to explain the golden thread of the restaurant, being young protege chefs in training, supporting local wines and produce is truly an incredible concept that resonates with me. The ambience is more relaxed for fine dining without compromise. The part of the experience that fell short was the chef’s counter itself. At a counter service, a brief welcome or acknowledgement from the executive chef is a standard part of the format. It doesn't need to be lengthy or conversational. A simple greeting is usually enough to set the tone and honour the intimacy of the setting. In this case, the executive chef did not greet or acknowledge us at any point during the evening, including after feedback was shared and we remained for several minutes. This was the only element that felt out of alignment with the level of hospitality the rest of the team delivered. If the chef is not going to interact with guests at the counter, that is completely acceptable, but it should be communicated up front. There is no additional charge for counter seating, but the format naturally creates an expectation of some level of engagement. A simple note from the team that the executive chef is extremely busy and will not be interacting that evening would have managed expectations and avoided any disconnect. This became more noticeable because the couple seated next to us received this from the chef, which highlighted the contrast. Sharing this because Protégé has the talent and team to deliver a truly exceptional experience. Either manage upfront or disclose, and this would bring the counter offering in line with the high standard that the rest of the staff already uphold.

We had the early dinner special - 3 courses for 795 pp. Everything was remarkable. The entire serving team is friendly and professional. Our lead server - Nonki - was particularly skilled. Every dish from bread at the beginning to the magical boerenkaas dessert was sublime. And the wine list is stunning - from accessibly priced bottles for a few hundred rands to rare vintages. Highly recommended.
