Saint, the latest creation by David Higgs and Gary Kyriacou comes in the form of a stylish twisted Italian-inspired restaurant and bar in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg.

Guided by head chef, David Higgs and trained by the best in Milan, chefs bring their knowledge and skill to fire-top and perfectly hand-made pizza from scratch, using imported wood-fire ovens from Naples.

“Through seasoning we reach simplicity. Through sweetening we spice. We have made Italian our way. Crazy, beautiful and true to us. Because, one mans virtue is really just another mans sin.” – Head Chef, David Higgs

We gave Saint a second try after a previous disappointing visit. The ambience is nice if the projectors work but if not it’s a pretty unremarkable space - they were “broken” during our special birthday dinner. The waiters are lackluster and we had to call them every time we needed water refilled. The food was mostly good enough - pizzas and pastas - but my husband’s pork belly was tasteless. My biggest complaint is the winelist. They won’t give you a list but sends a “sommelier” to suggest based on your taste - not paired with food - with an assumption that you will pay whatever knowing the prices are outrageous - most people won’t know unless you ask to look at the sommelier’s tablet though. Very few of SA top wines on the list. Also overpriced e.g., R680 for the cheapest bottle of red - I calculated at least 400% markup. The average wine price is around R1200-R1700 per bottle. This is really extortion! They also sent me a Whatsap beforehand with a list of things to note like a strict dress code - which was not enforced given the number shorts and slops. (I think this place really shouldn’t worry about dress codes - it is basically a pretentious pizza joint). No “look forward to see you” or “thanks for choosing us”. Saints has a much lower and more accurate rating on Tripadviser than here on Dineplan. Lesson learnt.. won’t be back.
