Jurgen Schneider: 'After 50 years of cooking I feel I came to the point to know exactly what I want to bring to the peoples palate and to the table.

All the styles we as chefs got through, in all kitchens around the world (traditionelle cooking, nouvelle cuisine, molecular style, farm to table, local is lekker, and last but not least Nature Kitchen) and the influence of each style I was thinking about my personal style a lot.

Since 40 years I am a mad forager and food from nature is for me the most inspiring topic. Here at the Western Cape in the heart of the Floral Kingdom the varieties of plants which are growing right in front of our doorstep are amazing.

Dune Spinach, Wild Sage, Cancer-bush, Buchu, Geranium, Confetti Bush, Sea Weed, Bitter Bush…and lots more…

We went there for lunch as a party of 2 and received a very warm welcome upon arrival. On such a hot day it was perfect to be seated inside by an open window. Our waiter was exceptionally attentive and welcoming. His wine recommendation was absolutely spot on and exactly what I had hoped for. We started with a small greeting from the kitchen while we were still deciding between the five-and the six- course menu. Because of the heat we chose the five-course option. The first amuse-bouche was a perfect introduction to the menu, the second -cold papaya soup with sesame foam-exceeded already all expectations. A wonderful refreshing start. The quail with bulgur was a true culinary delight, the polenta with wild spinach was also outstanding- definitely something you should try. As for the fish: I honestly can’t remember the last time I had such a perfectly cooked piece of fish. For the main course, we had beef tenderloin , topped with braised oxtail and aubergine, beautifully tender, complemented by slightly dried tomatoes- a dish just perfect. The cheese was a lovely refreshment before desert, variations of white and yellow peach with a mint sauce , absolutely divine. With our coffees, we were served small homemade sweets, perfectly balanced and just rightly sweetened. Conclusion: It is absolutely worth a trip. Jürgen Schneider and his young team make you feel truly welcome and like at home. Using and including the treasures of the surrounding nature makes the experience unique. We will definitely be back and are already looking forward to our next visit.

Best restaurant in the Hermanus/Gaansbai area in our view. Outstanding flavours beautifully presented. Sadly the venue cannot match the Schneider’s previous location but the food is so delicious it is always a delight to visit.

The Springbok dish was lovely. Never had a Springbok shank so soft and buttery. The combinations with local ingredients, such as Sand plant, were memorable. Very good value for money, compared to other fine dining offerings in the greater Overstrand area.
