The Fat Fish – George

An oasis of calm in the heart of the George city centre, The Fat Fish, offers the exact same delightfully original menu as its sister restaurant in Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy the finest, sustainably caught, seafood, the freshest sushi as well as a wide range of other innovative dishes in a gem of a location.
The lush, beautifully landscaped garden complete with water features, outdoor BBQ and children’s play area, offers true respite on a hot Garden Route summers day. While the stylish, contemporary interior features a series of more intimate dining spaces on varying levels, with no less than three fireplaces, to cosy up to in the colder wet winter months. In addition, The Fontus, Special Events Room, is available for private celebrations and often plays host to carefully curated food and wine pairings.

The menu is predominantly seafood-based and perfectly complemented by an award-winning wine list, classic cocktails and extensive craft gin selection. Be sure to look out for their regular “From the Fire” al fresco feasts and Paella Specials out in the garden when the weather allows.

Having worked internationally for a number of years, chef patron Christo Nortier has returned home. As passionate as he is experienced, Christo is determined to offer Garden Route diners a true culinary experience and an opportunity to venture away from the conventional in beautiful surrounds.

    Lovely setting, great service but the prices are crazy. R500 for that tiny platter of sushi really is absolutely insane. And it wasn't the freshest either.

    My wife and I are regulars at the Fat Fish. This visit we had the usual. My wife had the large prawns and rice. I had the fish and chips. My chips were not crisp and a little dry. The hake in batter was fresh and delicious. My wife's 10 prawns were soft and cooked to perfection. Friendly staff, great service. So 4.5 stars. We will be back as its the best fish restaurant we know.

    We were really looking forward to our meal at your restaurant, as we had eaten at your branch in Plett which was exceptional. It was difficult to find the restaurant as it is located at the back of another building and the signage isn't easily visible. The restaurant didn't seem particularly full and we were therefore surprised that the service was very slow. My husband was really looking forward to enjoying a wonderful piece of line fish and he was extremely disappointed, as the piece was extremely thin and small even though he asked for the middle cut, the top of the fish was burnt and the taste not good at all. Definitely not what he was expecting! The hake meal was average - the best part was the vegetables and the quinoa. Unfortunately, based on our experience at your restaurant, we will not be visiting again when in we are in George.

    It was fantastic. The waiters were lovely (particularly zaza who took care of us). If you are near George (within 90 minutes) it is definitely worth the drive over. The best restaurant in the area.
