Mouille Point, one of many special places in the Mother City where Table Mountain slopes ever gentler towards its rendezvous with the mighty Atlantic Ocean. The word ‘Mouille’, forever connected to lighthouse of the same name, stems from the French word meaning ‘anchoring ground’. With the customary exquisite cuisine and superior service that has fuelled the Hussar Grill legend for over 50 years, we could think of nowhere better to weigh anchor during a misty, autumnal Cape evening than the Hussar Grill Mouille Point. An enlightening evening of excellence awaits you, whatever the season.

After being told that The Hussar Grill serves some of the best steaks in Cape Town, I was genuinely looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. Our waitress recommended the R400 Ribeye with Marrow Bone as the restaurant’s signature and most popular steak. Sadly, it was one of the toughest ribeye steaks I’ve ever eaten. Although cooked rare as requested, it was full of sinew and extremely unpleasant to eat. To the restaurant’s credit, the waitress immediately took my steak back when I raised the issue. However, when the manager came over to discuss the complaint, my friend—who had ordered exactly the same steak—pointed out that his was also full of sinew. The manager’s attitude changed from initially questioning the complaint to apologising. The service throughout the evening was also below the standard I expected. The waitress forgot the lemon butter that was meant to accompany the calamari and when serving the red wine, she poured full glasses without first offering us a tasting, which is generally expected when opening a bottle at a restaurant of this calibre. The most disappointing part of the evening was that I had chosen The Hussar Grill to entertain friends visiting from Norway after hearing so many glowing recommendations. Instead, I was left feeling embarrassed that this was the experience they had of what was supposed to be one of Cape Town’s premier steak restaurants. Based on this visit, I cannot recommend The Hussar Grill and unfortunately, I won’t be returning.
