    We were given a table beside a draughty window. The wind was very strong blowing in making us cold. We were then placed at another table facing a painted brick wall. The mussels were over cooked in a thick synthetic garlic and wine sauce. We waited a very long time for our mains to arrive but to be fair our server came and apologised for the delay. When the steaks arrived my husband’s sirloin and my fillet were cooked as requested. However when I took the first bite of the fillet there was a very strong taste of lighter fuel or other gas that had impregnated into the meat. My husband tasted the fillet and spat the meat out as it was so strong. He immediately called our server over and explained the situation. He removed the plate of food which I had already added my sides on, chips, roasted veg, mushrooms & onion rings which we had paid additionally for. I refused a replacement as the evening was going so badly and my husband just wanted to leave. He quickly ate some of his sirloin then asked for the bill. The server said he had spoken to the manager and removed the R60 supplement for the fillet and given 10% off the bill. I hadn’t eaten any food as it had been taken away almost immediately we feel this was a very poor gesture owing to the multitude of failings we experienced. Our evening was so bad we cancelled a subsequent reservation. We have eaten in several Hussar Grills eg: Franschhoek, Hermanus, Mouille Point etc etc which are tremendous. I would not recommend visiting this one in Steenberg.

    I have never walked out a restaurant because of poor quality food before. We had visited the Hussars other location many times over the years and always enjoyed the food and experience. It was our last day after 3 weeks in Cape Town and also happens to be our wedding anniversary. We were pleasantly greeted by the staff on arrival and shown to our table. We ordered water and food and wine. I ordered a grilled calamari starter and my wife chose the boerewors. My calamari arrived quickly as did my wife’s dish. The calamari was off smelt funky and we both taped it and there was a strong taste of ammonia. My wife’s boerewors was very dry and did not taste that great. I let the server know that the calamari was off and she immediately said she would take it off the bill. We had both ordered roast deboned chicken my wife’s with lemon and garlic sauce and mine with bbq sauce. It arrived very quickly. The chicken was visually very unappealing. Imagine someone deboning a chicken. Cooking it and then forming it into a rectangular brick placing it into a vacuum pack and placing it into a cool room for some time so that the fat congealed around it. This is what arrived on our plates after being warmed slightly in an over or microwave and then having dollops of frankly unpleasant tasting sauce poured over it probably from a bottle. We both tried to eat it but my wife’s was covered in blobs of white fat and mine was appallingly badly presented more like bolting than roast chicken in consistently and completely tasteless. We decided to stop at that point and explained to the staff that we would be leaving because we were unwilling to eat the food. The manger said he would speak to the kitchen. Not sure how that went or what was said. Poorly run, poor attention to food hygiene and quality of meals being delivered. This brand has historically had an excellent reputation which is why we chose this restaurant. Avoid

    I take note you have increased your prices substantially since November. Was it necessary to increase and why so much for wine?

    Our waiter Harold was superb, thinking outside the box. Accommodating our request with the menu. Compliments to chef, our foods was good as per our request.

    Exceptional value for money, elegantly and efficiently served. The retro music is pleasing, but would be better if a little more subdued.
