The historic heritage building, circa 1803, just off trendy Kloof Street, has been transformed into a chic, upstairs-downstairs space, with the hip bar and patio perfect for cocktails. Amori Burger studied at Silwood Kitchen, cooked in Johannesburg and in the bush, where at a camp fire, the Upper Union concept was perfected.
Since opening at the beginning of 2023 it has created serial diners. “The first menu highlighted Cape Malay and the spice route, paying homage to the building and Cape Town,” says Amori. “Dishes are developed by our chefs who come with an idea, and we work on it together. They’re very proud when we choose their dish for the menu. I believe they need a voice. Three to four new dishes are launched in a month, with desserts and the cheese changing all the time.”
Order an array from the chef’s seasonal, plentiful small plates, or treat yourself to the sharing pasture menu. The house breads and butters will knock your socks off, as will the starter, either a zesty seabass ceviche with pineapple amba, papaya, tiger’s milk and ginger, or light-as-a-feather ox tongue. The picanha with waterblommetjie and nasturtium chimichurri and stout demi is to-die-for. It comes with a trio of splendid sides – sheep’s feta en papillote, an allium confit and the salt-baked beetroot, a true triumph.
The elements of fine dining are all there, without unnecessary fuss. The bespoke wine list and service is impressive. The food is 100% refined, with classic French techniques used as the foundation of lively dishes that are influenced by spice. They’re emotive, a perfect reflection of the essence of Amori.
