Introducing Yatai - Ramenbar: Where Simplicity Meets Complexity in Perfect Harmony

We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of Yatai - Ramenbar, a new Japanese-inspired ramen bar that promises to offer an authentic and heartfelt dining experience. Situated below Nikkei Japanese Peruvian on Bree Street, Cape Town, Yatai - Ramenbar is more than just a place to eat; it’s a space where tradition and modernity come together in a bowl of ramen crafted with care and passion.

At Yatai - Ramenbar, we believe in the power of simplicity. Our menu is thoughtfully curated, featuring a selection of ramen dishes that highlight the rich flavours and textures of Japanese cuisine. Each bowl is a testament to the art of ramen-making, where high-quality ingredients and time-honoured techniques are combined to create something truly special. The food has been created by renowned chefs Rikku O'Doccchu and Warwick King, both previously of Ex Gate and Exhibit A, bringing their expertise and flair to every dish. Whether you’re a ramen enthusiast or new to the experience, our offerings are designed to satisfy and delight.

Inspired by traditional Japanese food stalls, our restaurant’s interior is a modern interpretation of these iconic spaces. The design is both minimalist and inviting, capturing the essence of a Yatai—a place where people gather to enjoy simple yet exquisite food in a warm, communal setting. The interior design was masterfully executed by our longstanding design partners, SQ Design, who have once again helped us create a space that serves as a welcoming retreat from the hustle and bustle, where you can relax, unwind, and savour each bite.

Our approach to ramen is guided by our tagline: “Where simplicity meets complexity in perfect harmony.” This philosophy is at the core of everything we do, from the way we prepare our broth to the balance of flavours in each dish. We want our guests to experience the depth and nuance that can be found in something as humble as a bowl of ramen.

Yatai - Ramenbar is proudly owned by the PAN Collection Hospitality group, who are also behind some of Cape Town’s most beloved dining spots, including Nikkei Japanese Peruvian, Hacienda Coastal Mexican, Scala Pasta/Bar, Burger & Lobster and Iron Steak & Bar.     While the food and the service was excellent, the experience was soured by a strange interaction with an impatient manager. Though we were informed that there was a deadline upon arrival, as the customer, I can't dictate the speed at which the food arrives, so please take that into consideration before kicking customers out the door. Also, maybe mention the time constraints at some point during the booking process, so guests are prepared. Not great.

    The restaurant is absolutely stunning, and the service was excellent. Unfortunately, the ramen didn’t meet our expectations. The noodles were noticeably undercooked and had a floury taste, and the chicken ramen only included three small pieces of chicken thigh. That said, the broth was flavourful, and the starters and drinks were fantastic. Special shoutout to the desserts we tried: the matcha tiramisu, soy custard, and white chocolate & ginger mousse, and each one was delicious. The manager was gracious and went out of their way to make things right, which we really appreciated. I’ll definitely be back to give them another try!

    We celebrated my husband's birthday here - lovely restaurant with an awesome ambience....the food was great & the service even better!
