Wine, wine everywhere, tempting wine-lovers with the largest wine bar in the world. Welcome to Belthazar, a veritable theatre of fine food and wine on the cutting-edge of “shoppertainment”. A multi-purpose restaurant, grill, wine bar and gourmet home accessory shop, Belthazar brings a chic new concept in the culinary arts to Cape Town.

Dedicated to the wise man of the magi who was “lord of treasures”, a treasure trove of delights awaits foodies at Belthazar – along with an exclusive catalogue of kitchenware. (We might spell his name a little differently but we like to do things a little differently with a lot of style.)

Owners of award-winning Balducci, a landmark for contemporary dining at the Cape, travelled the world with their team to find an innovative formula which would showcase South African wine in a prime tourist location at the V&A Waterfront. Follow the romantic lamps to a terrace with dreamy views of Table Bay and the rich ambience of a wharf warehouse with thousands of bottles of wine, a glittering store of Riedel glassware, wine aprons, corkscrews, cookbooks and exclusive gourmet knives.

Excellent variety of steaks with clear and helpful explanation from our waiter Tawana who showed huge pride in the restaurant. Excellent wine list and a thoroughly enjoyable birthday meal which was made very special by the restaurant. Thoroughly recommend

I’ve been thinking a lot of about this, because there was nothing overtly negative about the experience, but I actually deeply regret spending my money at Belthazar. It’s not worth it. We are very lucky to be able to get a pretty good steak at most restaurants in South Africa. My steak and spinach was good, but not better than I’ve had at Spur or Cattle Barron or Hussar Grill. Perhaps you’ll assume I don’t know good food, however it doesn’t change my experience or that of the group I was with. This friend group picks a restaurant we haven’t tried before to go and experience every month. This is the first time I’ve been annoyed about it the next morning. My husband enjoyed his steak, he said the cauliflower was not enjoyable. No one else had any complaints about the food other than it was not worth the price we paid. We could’ve had a more unique experience at a place like Tang, but we could’ve had the same experience upstairs at Spur. But we wanted to try you guys out. I personally wouldn’t recommend it, based purely on the value for money. The Mac and cheese was incredibly average. Nice, but nothing special. The wine list is obnoxiously massive in size and overwhelming to page through. Completely unnecessary. The last bit is perhaps not your fault since you’re based in the V&A but it was incredibly loud outside. And too dark, we needed phone torches to read the menus. We won’t be returning. Our waiter, Gulver, was excellent though. It’s not child friendly either. Even though the website says no under 6, there aren’t menu options for older children. Not on you though, we couldn’t checked that before going, but I’d suggest that others rather make this an adults only experience.

Dear Deon Thank you for taking the time in writing your detailed review/ feedback, it is clear that the common thread subject to correction that runs through your review is price even so Yoh did enjoy our food. There is nothing wrong with spur, cattle baron or for that matter hussar we all occasionally frequent these long established eateries, with family children and friends Are you comparing the above to Belthazar is rather odious. WE are rated one of the best in the country and are unique in that Belthazar offers the meat and wine lovers paradise that is second to none. Just to mention of which you cannot compare to your other experiences we offer oval and imported beef, dry aged, wet aged, meat on and off the bone, Wagyu and not to mention grain and grass fed. Our standards are extremely high and we mainly buy consistent beef from humane feedlots like Karan and Chalmar. Our winelist is out of this world and includes at least 600 wines available for off and on consumption, graciously served in perhaps the best stemware available, riedel. We offer up to 250 wines by the glass that are dispensed out of the state or the art wine pouring and preservation system being the only one in South Africa and one of the biggest in the world. Unlike any restaurant, hygiene with cold chain and consistency are part of our dna couples with a unique experience. Whilst we appreciate your kind feedback, the fast food/ franchise chains you mentioned most probably suit your budget and should indeed be the places you frequent. Thank you for your feedback.

I ate @ Balthazar before covid. The ambiance was cozier & great vibes in the rrestaurant. The food was good, my husband loved his ribbye, my seafood platter was ok. The sommelier was good, all in all it was ok. To their defense very wet CT, cold & miserable, maybe that's why the restaurant was very quiet!!

Steaks were very “average”, not fitting the reputation or the price
