In December 2004, owner Niel du Bois followed his heart, gave his creative spirit free reins, took the plunge and did what many people only dream about – opening an open air restaurant literally on a beach. Where the best seafood is prepared and enjoyed in Spartan surroundings – just like on the West Coast.

The first De Vette Mossel Beach Seafood Restaurant was born. On an isolated and pristine beach at Groot Brak River near Mossel Bay.

Thanks to the continuous support by our newly found Mossel friends, De Vette Mossel grew and grew. At De Vette Mossel your hosts are local Hermanus residents, Gustave and Charne du Bois. They grew up with De Vette Mossel and love the sea and all it has to offer, as well as hosting guests.

    An Unforgettable Experience at De Vette Mossel! From the moment we arrived at De Vette Mossel, we were swept off our feet by not only the incredible seaside setting and mouthwatering seafood, but also by the warmest, most entertaining host we’ve ever encountered. The atmosphere is casual, coastal, and completely unpretentious – just what you want for a seafood feast. But what truly set the experience apart was our host, who welcomed us like old friends and had the whole crowd laughing in minutes. His jokey personality is world class, blending effortless charm with genuine care for every guest. The food? Absolutely sensational – a parade of perfectly prepared, fresh seafood served in true South African beach-style. Each dish was better than the last, and the laid-back, all-you-can-eat format made it feel more like a family gathering than a restaurant. If you're looking for authenticity, warmth, laughter, and flavour all rolled into one experience, De Vette Mossel is it. We left with full bellies and even fuller hearts. Can't wait to go back!

    Ons het die kos en ondervinding geniet maar ons voel dit is te gejaagd tussen die verskillende gange. Ons is nog besig met 'n gang dan kom die volgende kos al uit.

    Beautiful venue, wonderful food and very relaxing atmosphere. We celebrated my daughter's birthday here and she absolutely loved it. Will definitely be back when next we are on holiday in the area.
