Folk Cafe is a family friendly restaurant located in St James, beside the iconic St James tidal pool. Folk offers an excellent variety of food, with a focus on using ethical ingredients (free range, grass fed and organic) that are locally sourced and produced wherever possible.

All of the cakes are baked in house and food from the seasonal menu is made fresh, and to order, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wood fired pizza can't be beat! There is also an extensive wine offering, beer on tap, milkshakes and smoothies for those with a sweet tooth, plus we roast and distribute our own signature coffee.

The location offers a playground for the kids and a sea view for the adults, live music every Saturday afternoon and a large outdoor area to accommodate bigger groups.

    The big attraction was the Spingbok-All Blacks Rugby game. Unfortunately the sound was APPALLING, yet again, and it gets worse rather than better. This is why no-one wants to gather there any more. Loyal customers are visibly falling by the way. Management should pay attention to this and get a better service provider. The staff are always charming but were in short supply. We had to get up a few times to place orders.

    I am impressed that Folk immediately responded to my negative review. I feel I need to clarify an ambiguity in my review: when I said no-one wants to gather there any more, I meant gather for the rugby and not in general. If the technicians have fixed the sound then I am sure the enthusiastic local community will be back to enjoy the rugby. Folk is a neighbourhood asset and I am happy to acknowledge that.

    Thank you Folk for hosting us for a 30th birthday celebration - everything from the planning, food, service and vibes were great. We were 45 people and the staff at Folk were just excellent. We pre-ordered pizzas and drinks for the tables and when we arrived everything was set up and pizzas and drinks flowed smoothly. We brought our own birthday cake and after some of the butter icing melted they offered to take it to the kitchen and re-ice it for us! Huge shout out to the manager Ethel and our waiter Hozia. Highly recommend Folk as a venue for larger gatherings.

    The food was delicious, the ambience was warm and relaxing, and the service was friendly and attentive. Everything was well worth the price, making it excellent value for money. Overall, a wonderful experience and definitely a place I’d recommend!

    I had a bird poop on my head. You really must do something about them sitting on the rafters. Maybe some netting? Otherwise all great.

This is an outdoor section of Folk, and given the size and open nature of the space, netting the entire area unfortunately wouldn’t be feasible. On the bright side, in many cultures a little unexpected bird poop is considered a sign of good luck — although we completely understand it’s not exactly what you want during breakfast! We know you’ve been coming to Folk almost every week for the past few years, and we genuinely appreciate your continued support.
