While the 18th century Manor House and The Owner’s Cottage reflect their Huguenot heritage, The Restaurant and wine tasting area of Grande Provence project a chic industrial presence.

High-backed chairs upholstered in white leather draw the eye to the centre of the deep blue-grey hand-plastered walls, while deeply recessed windows frame the picturesque view from the interior.

Crisp white linen napery criss-crosses the table tops and the polished glasses and cutlery gleam with care and attention.

Over the winter months the flickering light of a log fire joins the candlelight to enhance the warmth and attentive hospitality at The Restaurant.

Leading off The Restaurant is the welcoming wine-tasting area. The bar dominates the centre of the room – striking in galvanised steel with black strapping. A touch of fun is evident with the tractor seat bar stools, while a fireplace and upholstered chairs soften the perimeter of the room, inviting guests savour every sip of the Estates award-winning wines.

I booked on Dineplan, but when I got to the restaurant, I was told that my reservation is with the Bistro as they had a function. The Bistro then referred me back to the restaurant and as it turns out they had a printed reservation list which included my reservation. After being allocated a table I was approached by two different waiters requesting me to move because I was seated at the table of other guests. The second request was whilst I was on a call and the waiter expected me to end the call. This was unnecessary and actually embarrassing. When my guests arrived, I had to call a waiter for service after waiting to be served for over 15 minutes, the waiter was impatient when we placed our orders, everyone else was already done with their lunch by the time we were served our mains, and everyone had left long before we were served desert. I won't use Dineplan again if this is the outcome I should come to expect. The food was great, it is a great venue, but the service was poor to say the least. I got the impression that the restaurant and waiters were prioritising foreign visitors with foreign accents. I entertained visitors from abroad and as a South African I was embarrassed about the service. I must mention that an employee who tended to the fireplace overheard us talking about the menu and he offered valuable insights. The only fast service was when we decided to move outside for desert, the waiter came sprinting with the bill in under 5 seconds.

We visited the restaurant on two Sundays and were very pleased both times with the outstanding food and especially the service. In addition to the beautiful ambiance and the numerous works of art, the very friendly and attentive staff were another reason to return. We highly recommend the restaurant!

Food by chef amazing and our waitress Memory was a credit to you. So joyful, helpful and really knew her trade. Say a big thank you to them both.

Beautifully prepared food, highlighting local and fresh ingredients, served by the warmest and kindest team. This place should be on everyone’s itinerary when visiting Franschhoek.

This was a highlight of our holiday. We may have failed in spotting a Leopard on our SA trip but having lunch at Grande Provence made up for it. The service, food and ambience is amazing, we will be back.
