TAPHUIS

The succession of ownership through the eras has layered the Estate’s rich history, and present day Lanzerac honours the rich and vast legacy by telling the stories of its past. Created during the Rawdon era, the Taphuis Bar is a place where guests have created many memories. The treacle brown bar has been welcoming thirsty travellers since the 1960’s, and although damaged in the 2017 fire, it has undergone extensive repairs to retain its original feel, with some of the elements that were salvaged from the flames being reused alongside new additions. The Taphuis’ country-inspired décor is rich in texture with rough stone walls, brick floors and exposed wooden ceilings

The gourmet pub-style menu offers sharing plates and light meals in a relaxed environment overflowing with beautiful country charm. The menu boasts homegrown food sourced from local farmers and suppliers, prepared with creativity and originality by the resident team of chefs. Dining options are either indoors set against an impressive handcrafted bar and large roaring fireplace, or outdoors on the shady terrace complete with garden views.

The dining room has a special charm with brick walls and English-style furniture, wing chairs and ceiling lamps. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. The food was exceptionally well presented and very delicate in flavour; our two different desserts were a delight.

Both burgers undercooked, one sent back and still not correct, blackened kongklip was ordinary, the service was disappointing, waiters not attentive, the Sauvignon by the glass was very good, coffee was okay.A great setting and otherwise very disappointing.

The service and ambience is 101% = such lovely wait-staff, so discreet and so very attentive. The setting is stunning, the place is very, very beautiful and we even had a lovely pianist in the background! The Lanzerac Rose was delicious and the perfect choise for a light Summer lunch. But the food is a bit contrived = very much over the top with blobs and sauces and more blobs and more sauces (maybe just not our particular style?) Personally I like a salad to be simple, fresh and crispy, mine was flattened by too much dressing and unrecognisable stuff. Both of our friend's were not impressed by the pork-belly (said they had had much better). Both enjoyed the lovely Creme Brulé but once again there was far too much on top! A sexy Creme Brule does not need ice cream and blobs and blobs of stuff on top - it takes away from the Simple Delight of the dish. So all in all I will definitely be back but would really suggest that you KISS and not overdo everything.

Unfortunately for this iconic venue, we were disappointed. Our first order of Sparkling water took 15 minutes to arrive, following a request for it. Starters were good but my wife's Coffee Crushed Venison Steak was tough, with half being left. There appeared to be a lack of management oversite - a 4 seater table beside us departed, but one lone glass was left upside down with a swizzle stick beside it, a white serviette as well as a blue tissue on the floor under the table, as well as the 4 chairs untidely scattered (not neatly pushed in) where the departing guests had left them. For the price one pays and the quality of the wine farm, these are 'easy wins' that an entrance level waiter or manager should notice.

seafood platter shared, unfortunately sitting outside the food was cold, would not have been adequate for a man, but tasty and loved the desert. Service done by Mabasa, very friendly and efficient.
