Heritage of the Cape

In 1979, the Maharajah was born on a simple idea: To offer a meal worthy of the name Maharajah, at a modest price, while serving traditional Indian flavors and using a range of authentic South African Indian cooking techniques.

44 Years later, and more meals than we can count, the Maharajah is still hosted by the same family, and serving meals true to its heritage. The place, over the decades, has vibrated to the rhythm of all those who fell in love with the rich decadent flavors. In doing so, the Maharajah has acquired more than a unique personality, it inherited a soul – the culinary jewel of the Cape, creating a harmonious reflection of Indian food at its finest.

This restaurant focuses on and celebrates the creative and masterful use of spices in Indian cuisine. It stays true to the authenticity and rich history of familiar dishes while adding playful and elevated elements. For example, the tandoori spicy chicken tikka are a fan favorite, oscillating between traditional and modern Indian cuisine. Each dish pushes the limits of flavor and spice combinations in the most innovative and delectable ways.

With years of experience in the restaurant industry, we specialize in corporate event catering, wedding catering and private party catering, we will gladly customize a menu to compliment your personal taste.

Relax and enjoy our unparalleled hospitality.

My partner and I came to Maharaj end of 2023 for the chicken & prawn curry. We had the best ever and have not stopped talking about it. Since then I have been in uk and came out in June for 3 months. We could not wait to return and left it for last meal before returning to uk. It was terribly disappointing. The chicken was dry, the prawns overcooked and floury and the sauce lacked the true Indian flavours but was still tasty. We did address this with the manager and he apologised. Unfortunately this was a costly bill for such a disappointing meal and would not be keen to return. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it may not be Indian run any longer as previously as we did not see any but that we don’t know. The waiter was lovely and his service was good

Disappointing Indian cuisine. My Maharaja Chicken on the bone tasted like it was prepared a day ago … chicken was dry and stringy and lacked flavour altogether… Such a pity as we’ve been there before and had a great meal…
