At Urban Playground, we’re all about crafting simple yet flavorful food that tells a story. From the creative minds behind Sense of Taste Chef School, Debs and Chef Peter Ayub, along with their son, Sous Chef Byron Thebus, and our talented team of chefs, we are a small but dynamic group redefining Gourmet Street Food.

Urban Playground offers sustainable, ethical, seasonal, and no-waste (nose-to-tail) dishes, crafted with love and care. We proudly support local producers and businesses, bringing their ingredients to life in our innovative, edgy open kitchen. It’s a loud, fun chef’s playground where every dish is designed to blow your taste buds away.

Community First
Through our Sense of Taste Chef School Feeding Program, we help fight hunger in our local community, feeding over 1000 people weekly. Every meal we serve helps support and uplift those in need. Fighting hunger one meal at a time.

    First time visiting Urban Playground and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience! We sat at the Chefs Table, which give you a birds-eye view of the goings on in the kitchen. The staff clearly love their job and know exactly what their individual tasks are. The vibe was amazing. Our meals were: 2 x Eisbein 1 x Pork belly 1 x Lamb kofta flatbread The pork belly and lamb kofta were absolutely delicious! The flavours were spot on and the portions were big. The eisbeins were huge and we had to take take-aways. One will feed us for another two meals, at least. Unfortunately they were a bit dry and the mash needed a little more salt, but this will not stop us from visiting again in the future. A great all-round experience!

    A brilliant little Cape Town hidden gem. The best food I've had in a long time, our entire group raved about every dish. Lovely small cosy setting and amazing staff. Over all a fabulous friday evening spent with family in a great restaurant. We will be back for sure!!!

    Third visit and last night went with friends who were equally impressed with the food and the service. Only negative feedback was google maps led us on a merry dance to get there.

    My wife and I had lunch here on Friday, decided on a selection of Tapas to share rather than a main meal. We ordered 5 Tapas, Amuse-bouche - complimentary starter, this was awesome, loved it! Cheese Pinwheels - was very tasty. Enjoyed it albeit a little rich for me. Chicken lollypop with egg fried rice - this was our Favorite, delicious flavors. West Coast mussel Biryani - enjoyed it however a little salty. Woodstock chilli smoked snoek samoosa, with pineapple and tomato jam - delicious !! Argentinian beef fillet, served with sweet potato mash, corn riblets and chimchurri sauce - this was delicious, my wife's favorite ! Ended with a complimentary black tea with a chocolate. Overall experience was very good, food excellent, service good, cleanliness good. If I have to have a criticism it would be personal hygiene practice of the staff. We were seated at the Chefs Table, so we were able to see our food being prepared. The chefs were handling the food to the plate with bare hands and often had their hands to their faces, hair or body whilst preparing and plating. This was a bit off-putting. The bill was R795 plus a R100 tip which included 2 beers and a bottle of white house wine. We felt this was a fair price and good value. Thoroughly enjoyed and will certainly return to taste more of this scrumptious menu.
