May 2025 marks the beginning of a new era for award-winning boutique hotel Ellerman House, with the opening of an innovative culinary destination – CURATE – in the striking Wine Gallery space. Just as wine is uniquely expressive of its terroir, conveying a sense of place in every glass, so CURATE will tell the story of South Africa’s soil and sea, transporting diners on an unforgettable culinary adventure.

Helmed by Ellerman House Head Chef Kieran Whyte, the culinary experience at CURATE – which will welcome 30 guests per seating – will be intrinsically linked to the seasonal produce sourced from Whyte’s hand-picked selection of small-scale farmers, fishers and producers. With Whyte’s focus on championing hyper-seasonal local produce, the menu at CURATE will be wholly informed by the ethos of allowing the ingredients to shine, telling a story of people and place on every plate.

CURATE will open with an eight-course degustation menu, drawing on the traditions and flavours of the region to offer an entirely unique dining experience. Bespoke handmade crockery, ceramics and knives from selected local artisans further enhance the creative expression of the Cape’s rich culinary heritage. Each course will be meticulously paired with South African wines selected from the 10 000-bottle Ellerman House wine cellar.

In transforming the space from the current Wine Gallery to CURATE, Ellerman House has once again partnered with renowned artist and sculptor Angus Taylor to shape the creative expression of CURATE. Reinforcing the notion of curation, craft and refinement, Taylor infuses the reimagined dining space with textural elements both raw and refined, further exploring the intersection of terroir across the worlds of wine and gastronomy.

We have been to all the other “fine dine/tasting menu” Resturants in Cape Town and not often I have to write a poor review but this was a rather mixed box….i would say only 3 of the 8 courses was good….it felt as though they were trying too hard. The wine pairing was also trying too hard to be different and was not very good, the pouring much to stingy and most definitely overpriced for what you got. The Sommelier was a very nice young man but lacked knowledge. The actual setting is interesting and dark. Absolutely no views, you are literally in a dark basement. Nicely done but maybe better on a winters day…..the staff was all friendly and young but most of them felt very fresh and not very knowledgeable.I think we were asked by 5 different people if we had any allergies…that does not include the phone call from the management earlier in the day to confirm the booking and ask the same...good to take allergy serious but definitely almost made me abit allergic having to respond again and again to everyone there. We were assigned a waitress to the table but were served by maybe 6 different ones. All in all not nearly as good as many other options in town and way to pricy for the experience.

Curate at Ellerman House responded on Fri 12 Dec 25:
Dear Camilla Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. We truly appreciate your honesty, even when the feedback is difficult to hear, as it helps us identify where we need to improve. We are very sorry to hear that your experience did not meet expectations, especially given your familiarity with Cape Town’s fine-dining scene. It is disappointing to learn that several of the courses and the wine pairing fell short for you. We aim for creativity and balance, not to “try too hard,” and your comments make it clear that we missed that mark during your visit. We also apologise for the inconsistency in service. While our team is trained to be thorough with allergy checks, asking multiple times is certainly not the seamless experience we want to deliver. We will be reviewing our service flow to ensure guests feel cared for, never overwhelmed. Likewise, we understand how having many different team members at your table can feel impersonal, and we will work on tightening that coordination. Regarding the setting and overall value, we appreciate your perspective. Feedback like this helps us reflect on where adjustments may be needed to ensure the experience matches both the environment and the price point. We are glad to hear that you found our staff friendly, and we will continue supporting our younger team members with additional training so that they can provide the level of knowledge and confidence our guests expect. Thank you again for your candid feedback. Warm regards The Curate team, at Ellerman House
