May 2025 marks the beginning of a new era for award-winning boutique hotel Ellerman House, with the opening of an innovative culinary destination – CURATE – in the striking Wine Gallery space. Just as wine is uniquely expressive of its terroir, conveying a sense of place in every glass, so CURATE will tell the story of South Africa’s soil and sea, transporting diners on an unforgettable culinary adventure.

Helmed by Ellerman House Head Chef Kieran Whyte, the culinary experience at CURATE – which will welcome 30 guests per seating – will be intrinsically linked to the seasonal produce sourced from Whyte’s hand-picked selection of small-scale farmers, fishers and producers. With Whyte’s focus on championing hyper-seasonal local produce, the menu at CURATE will be wholly informed by the ethos of allowing the ingredients to shine, telling a story of people and place on every plate.

CURATE will open with an eight-course degustation menu, drawing on the traditions and flavours of the region to offer an entirely unique dining experience. Bespoke handmade crockery, ceramics and knives from selected local artisans further enhance the creative expression of the Cape’s rich culinary heritage. Each course will be meticulously paired with South African wines selected from the 10 000-bottle Ellerman House wine cellar.

In transforming the space from the current Wine Gallery to CURATE, Ellerman House has once again partnered with renowned artist and sculptor Angus Taylor to shape the creative expression of CURATE. Reinforcing the notion of curation, craft and refinement, Taylor infuses the reimagined dining space with textural elements both raw and refined, further exploring the intersection of terroir across the worlds of wine and gastronomy.

We were warmly hosted by Tyrone, whose service was impeccable from start to finish. What truly elevated the evening was his engaging storytelling — thoughtfully tracing the inspiration behind each dish while tying it to South Africa’s rich culinary heritage and his own personal journey. It added a heartfelt and genuine touch to the experience. The setting struck the perfect balance between elegance and ease — sophisticated without feeling overly formal — while Chef Kieran Whyte and his team delivered a menu that was nothing short of a brilliant tribute to South African provenance. Every plate was thoughtful, refined, and proudly rooted in place.

Hands down the best fine dining experience in Cape Town. Authentic, gracious, warm and efficient service combined with outstanding locally inspired cuisine perfectly paired with off-the-track fine South African wines. Put it on your dance card.

From the moment I arrived, the service was outstanding — Zizipho welcomed me with warmth and elegance, guiding me through the house with thoughtful detail. The mixologist kicked off the evening with a delicious aperitif, perfectly described and expertly crafted. Cohen, the sommelier, brought a deep knowledge and enthusiasm when walking us through the wine gallery and stunning cellar. I’m not much of a wine enthusiast myself, but his passion was contagious. The attention to detail in the space, especially the wine soil wall, is remarkable. Now, the food: this is where Curate sets itself apart. The Saldanha Kingklip was a standout — a refreshing take that avoided the common Cape Town curry overkill. Each dish was thoughtfully constructed and well-balanced. I had doubts about the cheese ice cream, but I ended up wanting a bucket of it — smooth, creamy, and surprisingly addictive. While I wasn’t a fan of the pineapple pairing, a more citrusy contrast could elevate it further. The white chocolate porridge was the perfect nostalgic touch for a chilly evening — warm, cozy, and deeply satisfying. My only critique was the temperature of the food — some dishes arrived cooler than ideal, which slightly detracted from the experience. Warming the plates would help preserve the integrity of such beautifully made food. Curate has all the fine dining essentials in place, and I’m genuinely excited to return in a few months to see how they grow. A promising addition to the Cape Town culinary scene.
