May 2025 marks the beginning of a new era for award-winning boutique hotel Ellerman House, with the opening of an innovative culinary destination – CURATE – in the striking Wine Gallery space. Just as wine is uniquely expressive of its terroir, conveying a sense of place in every glass, so CURATE will tell the story of South Africa’s soil and sea, transporting diners on an unforgettable culinary adventure.

Helmed by Ellerman House Head Chef Kieran Whyte, the culinary experience at CURATE – which will welcome 30 guests per seating – will be intrinsically linked to the seasonal produce sourced from Whyte’s hand-picked selection of small-scale farmers, fishers and producers. With Whyte’s focus on championing hyper-seasonal local produce, the menu at CURATE will be wholly informed by the ethos of allowing the ingredients to shine, telling a story of people and place on every plate.

CURATE will open with an eight-course degustation menu, drawing on the traditions and flavours of the region to offer an entirely unique dining experience. Bespoke handmade crockery, ceramics and knives from selected local artisans further enhance the creative expression of the Cape’s rich culinary heritage. Each course will be meticulously paired with South African wines selected from the 10 000-bottle Ellerman House wine cellar.

In transforming the space from the current Wine Gallery to CURATE, Ellerman House has once again partnered with renowned artist and sculptor Angus Taylor to shape the creative expression of CURATE. Reinforcing the notion of curation, craft and refinement, Taylor infuses the reimagined dining space with textural elements both raw and refined, further exploring the intersection of terroir across the worlds of wine and gastronomy.

A very nice welcome - very knowledgeable bar tender who described the welcome drink with more enthusiasm than I have ever heard. Two mini canapés - one was nice the other fishy and difficult to handle. The room is very woody and lacks atmosphere and warmth. All the dishes are locally inspired but many of the flavours are quite strong. The langoustine starter was delicious and the best dish on the menu. The two tiny slivers of lamb as a main were also delicious but insignificant portions. One of the vegetable side dishes in between courses with a pumpkin base was served cold and inedible. Ironically the biggest portion of the entire meal comes at the end with a huge bowl of white chocolate mousse - tasty - but not what you want to see at the end of 8 courses. The biggest downer was the stemware used for a meal that will cost your R13,000 for 3 guests. Though Riedel it is the commercial variety. Fine dining - especially at the prices charged - goes with fine stemware. When I asked the sommelier if we could have nicer glasses his response was something like - the finer stemware is for the more expensive wine pairing option - we had clearly cut corners by choosing the R1800 per person wine pairing option. Sorry that is not an acceptable response. You can go out in Capetown - enjoy a beautiful meal - delicious wine - be served in thin stem glasses - paying R1800 for 2 guests!

Dear Robert, Thank you for your detailed feedback regarding your recent visit to Curate. I am truly sorry that your experience did not meet expectations. While I am glad you enjoyed the welcome, as well as the langoustine and lamb, it is clear that several elements fell short. Your comments on flavour balance, portion sizes, and the pumpkin dish have been noted and will be addressed with the chefs to ensure better consistency. We also regret that the ambiance and final course did not meet your expectations. Most importantly, I want to sincerely apologise for your experience with the stemware and the response from our sommelier. This is not the level of service we strive to provide, and your feedback has been taken seriously. We understand the investment involved in dining with us and are sorry we did not deliver the experience you deserved. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again and provide a much improved visit. Kind regards, Jean

The best fine dining restaurant experience in Cape Town, period. The food was South African themed, which is a refreshing twist compared to the usual foreign/euro-centric. Loved every aspect of seeing South African cuisine elevated. The decor was incredible and intentional. The staff were attentive, we were warmly welcomed and attended to with excellent service and they went the extra mile as we were having a celebration dinner. This is Cape Town's best kept secret. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back!
