We had another wonderful long lunch at Deux Lions! The food was outstanding as was the service. Highlights included the yellowtail ceviche, panko prawns, lamb rump and of course the signature salmon trout….. simply sublime

We were lucky that Deux Lions is still under the radar so we were able to get a last minute booking for two. Had the cauliflower starter and the yellowtail ceviche, both beautifully presented and delicious. For mains the lamb and the trout. The lamb was unfortunately tough so disappointing but the fresh trout was super, light and a great summer dish. Desserts, peanut ice cream with peanut and dark chocolate tart and a strawberry sorbet with panna cotta, both a treat. Sat in the garden on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Professor, our waiter, provided great service and entertaining chat.

A perfect setting for an afternoon slow late lunch, aperitifs in the garden, accompanied by the soothing sounds of Franschoek River (more like a rivulet) and birds singing. By the time they bring you a delightfully warm brioche with olive butter and divine smoked Clamato olives, you will have already observed baby guinea fowl chicks cross the road, under the watchful eye of a massive migratory Egyptian goose, and you would have downed a couple of colourful and delicious cordials (or something stronger) while watching the setting sun reflect its last rays off the Valley mountains. Thus fully relaxed and prepped for your dinner you will order several amazing tasty starters from Chef Nanda’s carefully curated French-with-African-twist menu, such as perhaps a roasted cauliflower or Panko Prawns (the best!) and before you know it your attentive waiter (Thanks, Evered!) will be serving you a mouthwatering lamb-shank, or melt-in your mouth trout, or awake-your-senses green onion and leek tart-tatin . And when you literally think you could not eat another morsel Nanda will tell you about her heavenly desserts, calm your nerves with an Amarula fortified affogato, sweeten her deal with a few samplings of her freshest preserves (cherry jam to die for, and ginger in verjus dipped local Camembert cube, for example) and that alone will fully shock you into tackling the out of this world desserts - which should not be described but sampled and devoured - before this talented young female gem of a chef (soon to be nominated for top under 30, I bet my wisdom tooth on it) moves on to conquer more of the world’s palates! Run, don’t walk, to Chef Nanda’s Deux Lions kitchen and don’t forget to ask for seconds! Warmly, Olla
