Located at 84 Harrington Street, East City Grill & Yakiniku brings two dining concepts
under one roof — a celebration of South African heritage and Asian flair, led by Executive
Chef Jaycee Ferreira.
At East City Grill, Ferreira’s flame-led cooking and local Wagyu define a menu rooted in
South African tradition yet shaped by Asian influence and Cape Town’s modern edge.
Across the room, Yakiniku offers an immersive Japanese-style grill experience inspired by
Tokyo’s smoky yakiniku-ya, where guests cook, share, and connect around the flame.
Housed within a landmark hemp building designed by Wolf & Wolf Architects, it’s two
flames, one destination, and a new rhythm for the city.

It’s always a little unfair to review something in its infancy, things take time so, let’s concentrate on the positives. Clearly, the owner is a restauranteur who knows what works. The interior design is fabulous, a sense of place. I like large tables for two which gives you space, especially when sharing small plates unlike, say, Marble, where you can eat your neighbour's meal for them! The wine list is great and it’s pricing the best I’ve seen in a central CPT restaurant, many wines are marked up by 25-50% unlike the 2-300% elsewhere. Wine by the glass is actually by carafe so, 1 1/2 to 2 glasses! Service is attentive and the menu attractive. To be honest, the size of portions were very big which means we had no appetite left for the interesting desserts. Dining with a veggie is always interesting when it comes to grill/fire. There were quite a few suitable dishes but, we were given the impression that the chef finds veggie a pain which sounds archaic!! One dish, smashed potatoes with gruyere came out as potato puree, which was a shame as it sounded like a great dish. I can see bloggers/influencers being enamoured with the space, over time I’m sure the food will match the surroundings.
