A Disappointing Experience Despite Excellent Cuisine. While the food at this restaurant was of a very high standard—compliments to the chef—the overall experience was undermined by poor service and a lack of professionalism, particularly disappointing given the restaurant's premium positioning. The booking process was frustrating from the outset. Multiple phone calls and emails went unanswered, forcing me to visit in person to make a special reservation. Despite this effort, the reservation was made for the wrong number of guests, requiring yet another trip to the restaurant, as there was still no response to further attempts at communication. On the day of our visit, the quality of the food did not disappoint. However, the service failed to meet expectations. We ordered a bottle of white wine to enjoy as a pre-dinner drink, but it took 30 minutes to arrive and was only served alongside our starters—defeating its purpose. Similarly, one guest ordered a cocktail as a pre-dinner drink, but it was not delivered until he was already eating his starter, well after the intended time. Service timing continued to be inconsistent throughout the meal. One guest received her main course approximately ten minutes before the rest of the table, leaving her to dine alone while others waited. In summary, while the kitchen delivered an excellent dining experience, the front-of-house operations were far below the standard expected at this price point. For a premium restaurant, service should enhance—not detract from—the overall experience.

It was the most disappointing dining experience I've had. The service was poor. The veg options of a set menu were not available, and the substitutes were less than satisfactory, yet the R565 pp charge for 2 courses was still billed. We waited 30 min for drinks only to be told the choice made was unavailable , the second option presented was not chilled, and we had to ask for service thereafter. The food was average. A tip of 12% was automatically added to the bill and was removed following our query. Very disappointing. Certainly not like the experiences at Norval. I won't recommend this establishment and certainly won't return. There are so many other options in CT for such an indifferent attitude to exist.

We were the only people in the restaurant on Saturday. I booked thinking that there would a special brunch menu as indicated on their Instagram page but there was no Brunch menu, just a regular menu. The quality of food was good but being the only ones at the restaurant killed the vibe.

The star of the evening was Petronella, her service and personable and just lovely. She read her audience so well, made useful recommendations and truly listened to her guest needs, just exceptional, Thank you! The Prawn risotto and Ravioli were also exceptional. The wine list is superb but adding a bit of info at the back on the Estates whose wines are listed would be helpful.

Grub & Vine Bree Str. responded on Fri 03 Oct 25:
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that Petronella made such a positive impression as she truly is an asset to our team. We’re also thrilled you enjoyed the prawn risotto and ravioli, and that the wine list complemented your evening so well. Your suggestion about including more estate information on the wine list is much appreciated and will be taken into consideration. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

Our only comment on delicious main course is that there was too much salt in. Thirsty whole night.

Grub & Vine Bree Str. responded on Fri 03 Oct 25:
We’re delighted that you enjoyed your main course, but we’re truly sorry to hear that the seasoning was a little heavy and left you feeling uncomfortable afterwards. Your comments are very valuable, and we’ll be sure to share them with our kitchen team so we can improve. We hope to welcome you back soon for an even better experience.

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with the Culture Tasting of the Spring menu. Conceptually, the menu looked exciting and we were eager for the culinary experience so many have spoken of with high regard. Unfortunately, we left with mixed feelings. First off, the service from Petronella and the team was flawless. She was knowledgeable, attentive, and wonderfully friendly. The restaurant itself offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with soft music and a calm bistro ambiance - an ideal setting for a special evening. Opting for the paired Spring tasting menu seemed like the perfect way to experience the variety on offer. Unfortunately, some dishes fell short in execution on very basic levels. A few components felt under or overcooked, flavors lacked depth (the prawn risotto, for example, tasted mainly of vegetable stock), and the dessert disappointed with a gritty crémeux. Portions were exceptionally large, speaking as a South African who can eat, and left us uncomfortably full even before the main course arrived. My wife ultimately had to take the final two dishes to go. We were told the generous portions are meant to accommodate American tourists visiting at this time of year, but it felt out of balance for a tasting menu. For the price, the food simply didn’t meet expectations or match what that money could buy elsewhere in the Mother City. Regrettably, this meal will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. That said, the menu clearly has incredible potential. With smaller portions and sharper attention to detail in execution, it could shine - especially given the fantastic wines offered with the pairing. For now, my recommendation would be to skip the tasting menu and instead opt for a two- or three-course selection. A heartfelt thanks again to Petronella for making us feel so welcomed and celebrated on our special day.
