Gourmet Guide Description

It’s on the Leeu Estate in Franschhoek that chef Peter Duncan works his magic. He’s choreographed a celebratory menu that weaves through his childhood, travels and favourite produce, coalescing as a noteworthy dining odyssey.

The fun begins in the lounge with a glass of bubbles overlooking the estate, which boasts 128 olive trees bearing fruit for their own olive oil. Local wines are heralded, but if you wish to venture further afield, peruse the impressive menu, or order a cocktail. Choose from a classic, fine-and-rare or non-alcoholic wine pairing to enjoy with your multi-course lunch or dinner.

The amuse bouche is presented in a three-tier wooden vessel – Leeu Estate ‘olives’ which explode in your mouth, reminiscent of Peter’s time in San Sebastian. This is sure to remain on the menu as his signature.

A palate cleanser of kalamansi and mopane worms, edgy and thought-provoking, gets the diner ready for the main course. Service executed by a large team is conversant, seamless and proud. A wooden box is opened to reveal the Denver-cut Wagyu from the Karoo with an 8-9 marble rating. It’s returned and served with generous shavings of Willowdale truffles alongside sweet potato and heavenly jus.

An artfully presented Langbaken cheese with stout Willis, Jerusalem artichoke and mustard leads into the dessert, a light combination of guava (more childhood memories), blood orange and hibiscus, before the sweet trolley is presented. Enjoy at the table or take home with indelible memories of a spectacular meal.
