Set in a converted house in central Franschhoek, the atmosphere at Le Bon Vivant is homely and relaxed, while reminiscent of contemporary French restaurants. The glass wall allows you to see Pierre Hendriks and his team at work. Tables are also available in the shaded garden next to the restaurant for lunch and dinner on warm summer evenings.

Excellent food and service. Since we got the recommentation from our Dutch guesthouse manager in 2005 we come here regularly! We often took the surprise menu with the wine pairing. Now with the older age we usually take two or tree courses. The food is beautifully presented and it tastes great.

Another fantastic experience at Le Bon Vivant. Highly recommend the “All of the above” dessert option. Enjoy! Thank you to all that made it an amazing experience for us.

We came here with high expectations. We previously dined at other places in Franshhoek (Protege, Eleven, Oku, etc.) and were convinced by the 4.8 rating to come here this time. Unfortunately, the experience was not on par with other places. Location itself is convenient and very central. However the ambience is very „unloved“. No table cloths, grey walls, inside very sad. There is so much potential, but the owners seem to have no imagination for even simple ideas to make the experience „comfy“ or „elaborated“. Remember, this is a place in the fine dining hotspot Franshhoek, and it prides itself of being named the best restaurant in South Africa in 2020. The service is nice, but rough. At the beginning we were the only guests and everybody was very attentative, but once the place filled up there was little attention to our table. As this was a family anniversary we got half a glas of bubbles each - which was nice. But come on, half a glass? when I reordered I got a full glas. This is a polite gesture in general, but looks cheap when you apply different standards. The food generally unfortunately was not up to par. Kids got al dente pasta, but the fish was chewy. The greetings from the kitchen had a nice but tiny piece of meat on too much plum mash which destroyed the taste. Less is sometimes more. The artisan bread was very dry, I can only assume very old. Our starters where overcooked prawns and the scallops were disappointing. Apparently they were marinated in vinegar, but only tasted like that - acidy and chewy. The sausse was more a soup. Also the crayfish I had as main was dry/ overcooked and instead of a sauce (which was not presented as an add-on but already on the plate) was more a soup, the mussels lacked taste and I do not understand the concept behind putting watery tomatoes on every dish. In the end we did not have to pay for the scallops, which I appreciate, but we skippedthe dessert and left with a heavy stomach and a lot of regret.
