We go against the grain of the majority by not enjoying our food experience at Mamacitas. Parking was tricky as it usually is in this part of town, but we struck lucky. The friendly doorman checked our booking and we were taken to our table by a waitress who didn’t make any special effort to make us feel particularly welcome. The decor is very on point - young, trendy, and vibrant. It’s colourful, it’s loud. Our waiter told us he was new to the job, so we were gentle with him. We had great difficulty in hearing what he said and this was a combination of the background music and his soft-spoken tones. We ordered the Platter for two at R569 and it included Taquitos, quesadillas, nachos, avo fries and dynamite jalapeños. We did not see on the menu that platters are only available at certain times and by pre-order only. Perhaps because he was new, the waiter wasn’t aware of this either. We were told that the platter would take a long time and we appreciated the honesty - especially when we were told that a ‘long time’ only meant 30 - 40 minutes. We thought we would just kick back, and enjoy our bottle of Bosman Family Cabernet as we waited. The problem was that we waited for what seemed like an eternity for the wine to arrive. When the food came, it was slightly chaotic as we scrambled to clear the table to make space. The platter was big - and covered in what looked like a lot of sauce stripes. A bit like those over-decorated sushi plates. But that was cosmetic. The real problem was that the food was cold. And it wasn’t great. There was also no way of telling which dish was chicken, pork or beef, so my non-pork-eating husband had to run the gauntlet and play a game of chance. He said that he couldn’t tell the difference between any of them, and I sadly had to concur. We didn’t enjoy the food and are big fans of Tex-Mex/Mexican cuisine. We were so disappointed. The friendly manager came to speak to us and was trying to understand why food would arrive at our table cold. He was understanding and sympathetic and offered to give us our drinks on the house by way of apology. We did mention to him that our waiter seemed in need of more training and I did suggest that perhaps he wasn’t ready to be out on the floor to do a full service. We did not blame the waiter at all. We decided to try and rally with dessert, so we ordered the cheesecake Churros. (Two churros stuffed with cheesecake, fried, rolled in cinnamon and sugar, topped with Cool Whip, passion fruit and lemon zest.). We just went from bad to worse. Again - not to our taste at all. The overwhelming flavour was of passion fruit and the cheesecake filling felt fatty and lacked flavour. Everyone else may love them, and they may be a Mamacitia top dessert favourite, but we didn’t enjoy them. Overall, it was a disappointing dining experience, but if you are looking for an achingly hip and trendy cocktail bar in this very on-point part of town - it’s the place to go.

First time there. Service was amazing. No waiting period only in the beginning when no waiter was assigned to our table but got assistance straight away. Friendly staff
