Ōku Asian Eatery is a Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant situated on Franschhoek’s main road.

The restaurant interior is inspired by the minimalistic design popular in the traditional Asian culture with delicate artwork and unique bonsai trees decorating the walls of the restaurant.

The team guided by Ryan Shell has created an ever-evolving menu that showcases traditional Asian-themed tones in a respectful manner whilst using high-quality local and seasonal produce. Our passionate front-of-house team is driven to deliver excellence in all aspects of service whilst displaying empathy for all of our guests by attending to their needs and desires.

Our wine list is focused on local wineries from in and around the valley as well as a selection of cocktails and sakes, including our own house brand beer-styled sakes.

The dining experience is completed with instrumental music that evokes a sense of calmness in our guests that enables them to unwind and relax.

We made a booking and paid a deposit online for the 4/5 course meal menu. We get to the restaurant and according to the waiters it’s no longer available however on the restaurants website it’s still there. Waiters say the company needs to update their website. It actually was so disappointing to drive all that way just to be told we no longer doing this menu. I wish the restaurant could have called us before confirming the book as well and taking a deposit for the booking. We could have saved us a whole lot of travel and drama. Not a good experience at all. Also they placed us right next to the kitchen door so this was always opening and closing with waiters going in and out. Also there were flies around our table and a few others, waiters saw us trying to chase them away but did nothing to help the situation. They all seem to be engaging in their own conversations.

We had a very pleasant experience at Oku. The service was great and we had a good laugh with our waiter. The timing of the courses was great. The beverage pairing was okay. The only thing is that the Kaiseki (11 courses) should have been a bite sized course menu, but were sometimes full courses. For us, as not very big eaters, it was way too much food. Had the portions been half of what they were I’d give this place an 9/10.

You have to go to Oku! The food is excellent. We did the 11 course menu and every bite was a delicious taste sensation. It was very hard to pick our favourite course and we went back and forth between the lobster and the beef tartar for a while. We finally agreed on the tartar because of the soy cured egg yolk. We have had to stop going to some of our favourite restaurants in Cape Town because of steep price increases, but Oku is really very good value and just as special. I have to give a special shout out to our waiter. His energy, enthusiasm and ability to engage with us and the guests at other tables is exceptional. BTW the Japanese cheesecake is also really really good.
