Ōku Asian Eatery is a Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant situated on Franschhoek’s main road.

The restaurant interior is inspired by the minimalistic design popular in the traditional Asian culture with delicate artwork and unique bonsai trees decorating the walls of the restaurant.

The team guided by Ryan Shell has created an ever-evolving menu that showcases traditional Asian-themed tones in a respectful manner whilst using high-quality local and seasonal produce. Our passionate front-of-house team is driven to deliver excellence in all aspects of service whilst displaying empathy for all of our guests by attending to their needs and desires.

Our wine list is focused on local wineries from in and around the valley as well as a selection of cocktails and sakes, including our own house brand beer-styled sakes.

The dining experience is completed with instrumental music that evokes a sense of calmness in our guests that enables them to unwind and relax.

    It was quite disturbing to hear the manager fighting with our waiter because he made us taste two wines before finally settling on one. He also ignored us with tainted our experience of the place.

    Oku is a pleasing space with enthusiastic staff and the food we received seemed okay. However the evening was a debacle. The ‘concept’, always a danger signal when concept is written on a website, is to choose four courses from a set menu. So far so good, it should be simple enough, what could go wrong? Well we ordered drinks, amused ourselves for a while until the first amuse bouche arrived which took seconds to eat and we waited, and waited some more and another amuse bouche arrived and another after that. We were, by then, perplexed and not a little agitated. We expressed our disquiet to the poor waiter. Over an hour passed before the first of our small course made an appearance. Then another amuse bouche arrived. More waiting ensued. Discontent among the six of us reached panic levels. We remonstrated with a manager and when the next course finally came and two hours had passed, we decided to abandon ship, asked for the bill and escaped. Apparently this experience is not uncommon and part of the ‘concept’.

    A wonderful evening with friendly and informative staff, what a treat. Our waiter was kind enough to show us how to make the origami dragons which was so lovely of him and great fun.

    We wanted something out of the ordinary and we’re not disappointed. We were welcomed and the menu explained. From the moment the first plate arrived, the quality stood out for the flavour and attention to detail. Wanting to try a variety of what was on offer, we took the advice of our waiter and ordered five dishes between two of us, which was perfect for lunch, leaving room for a desert. Sharing plates was more practical with some than others but we managed it! Throughout, the service was efficient and friendly, without being rushed or intrusive. In all, an excellent experience.
