very average and limited lunch menu options

Palm Terrace at Palm House responded on Mon 29 Dec 25:
Dear Shelly, Thank you for your feedback. Our Palm Terrace lunch menu is intentionally curated and designed primarily around refined small plates for sharing, offering a lighter, social style of dining. The menu is complemented by seasonal mains, salads, artisan sandwiches, and vegetarian options, with a focus on quality, freshness, and responsible sourcing rather than volume. While this comment is not consistent with the majority of feedback we receive, we value all guest perspectives and use them to continually refine and improve our offering. We’re sorry the menu did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Kind Regards Gregory Henderson ( Executive Chef)

Hi Palm Terrace team I was a little surprised at the response, given that we had simply rated it as average. We do note that you haven't asked for any specific feedback in the above, nor actually engaged with us on the day, so the initial rating from us should probably have provided you some specifics. Palm House is a lovely setting, and the menu indeed does present as good quality and fresh food. We would however note the below specifics from our experience: 1. Salad options: none of your salads contain any meat protein. We asked the waiter if he could arrange for a chicken breast to be added, which he seemed nervous to do. He did come back to us a few minutes later with the response 'the kitchen says no, they don't do it that way'. 2. Small Plates: We were actually very keen on this option, however as it was a hot summers day we wanted something light, and the menu specified that we had to order at least 4 plates, which we would not have been able to finish 3. Side salad: I ordered an additional gem garden side salad, and my friend also had a side salad. Hers came with a dressing, mine did not. When we enquired why, we were told 'that's how it comes', and there was no offering to bring a dressing 4. Fish Tacos: my friend had ordered this, which came totally drenched in sauce with a salty taste that was inedible. Unfortunately, as a result, we returned it, and there was no engagement or effort from the Kitchen or Management as to enquire with us what the problem was, or solicit feedback to ensure the next dish she choose would be more suitable 5. Saltiness: the sandwich I ordered was also over salted The above instances, when combined, marred our experience, hence we simply chose an average rating. Yours Sincerely Shelley

There is nothing good to say about the Christmas lunch I paid R950 per head for. On arrival in the parking area next to my name it stated that my booking was still unpaid when I had already paid in full and up front as requested. The dining room lacked Christmas ambience... pink dried flowers shoved in a small vase as table decorations, the cheapest Christmas crackers in an attempt to create some festive cheer, the staff were untrained for the event (cutlery missing for 2 settings within our group, not knowing what they were serving when asked questions, no one to be found when we required our glasses topped up so did it ourselves, the only small platter of meat was plonked in front of me until it was whisked away and placed in the centre of the table for 3 people to share, all deserts placed in front of me to pass to my guests, staff reaching over me to remove empty dishes from the table whilst I was still eating! The food was a mismatch of ingredients... I think the chef was trying to mimic THE TABLE restaurants at De Meye, Stellenbosch and Oak Valley, Elgin and if so, he fell horribly short! Small sharing round bowls of vegetables and roast potatoes allowing 2 carrots and 2 stems of broccoli and 3 little potatoes on each plate and only when asked in horror if the small platter of lamb was for all 3 guests who chose it rather than turkey, did another small helping of lamb and few slices of turkey appear on the table as an afterthought. The three deserts were a small dense panna cotta which did not wobble, a cherry trifle that was overwhelmed by a stinky soured cream cheese topping which one had to remove in order to eat the rest, and an unforgettable mince pie ice-cream sandwiched between two heavily flavoured ginger biscuits! Then for the grand finale, I was presented with my bill for an amount over R6000 including double the charge for corkage to what I was originally quoted! In summary, hugely disappointed and never ever again!
