The breathtaking view of Cape Town’s working harbour equates with the cuisine. This La Colombe seaside star has elevated the culinary offering of the V&A Waterfront to world-class. After appreciating the setting, it’s all about the cutting-edge cuisine choreographed into a gastronomic adventure.

Each season brings new surprises, like spring bark, porcini mushrooms and truffles. John’s talent for presentation is to be admired, not only for the unique receptacles, but for his light touch when it comes to pulling a plate together. The planning of a rhythmic menu is another gift, as he endeavours to keep vegetarians sated by ensuring that hero vegetables have a protein texture a ‘meat’. Gluten-and lactose-free diners too are well catered for, despite the restaurant being seafood-centric. Here the emphasis is on flavour, serving ingredients as good as they can be.

Chef John Norris-Rogers and his team are constantly seeking unique and special seafood and other local ingredients. Diners rave about revelations like his langoustine tortellini with pork jowl, rich and resonant, finished off with a spiced coconut veloute. You’ll be invited to leave your seats to watch the petite palate cleanser being crafted. Impressive tableside service and above-par navigation of wine pairings adds to the allure of an unforgettable epicurean passage.

Desserts are indicative of an instinct for combining sweet and savoury. The strawberry sherbet dessert has honey elements, with ground fennel and fennel flowers, to delight in summer. In winter, it may be something more comforting like apple with cinnamon and honey. It may sound simple, but like all dishes, will be complex and intriguing, worth returning for.

    Everything perfect....only tiny criticism was chefs menu was a tad rich through all the courses....but loved our 4th visit and look forward to the 5th!

    Overall the food was very good. Payed a surcharge of ZAR 450 for wagyu beef so we could taste two different main courses. Beef was very tough and NOT worth the money. No apology from the chef. Waiter came back from kitchen and said : sometimes you get a tough cut ??????
