The name of Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant is inspired by La Motte’s admiration of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 – 1957). Pierneef’s adoration of the South African landscape and his appreciation of the country’s diversity are reflected in the restaurant’s focus on heritage cuisine and how it embraces cultural influences, ingredients and recipes. His European inspirations, exceptional creativity as well as pioneering efforts in the South African art environment, involving new techniques and various genres, also resonate with Pierneef à La Motte’s interpretation of the history of South African cuisine and its strive towards innovation in executing modern South African heritage cuisine.

Overall the location is wonderful, our waitress Marilyn was attentive, efficient and friendly. The starter was a basically a Mezze, African style, tasty, simple, adequate but unadventurous. The main course meat was absolutely delicious, I had shoulder of pork, one slice per person/per plate...we waited an hour between between starter and main course.....toooooo long even on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Cost R355 per person, wine extra. The main course was accompanied by boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes ...far too much starch and that’s all...no vegetables.....??? My rating was lowered even more by the dessert (and extra R95 per person). The menu was a fig mille feuille, I really regret not taking a picture, it was a DIY dessert, the ingredients were on the plate...end of....another of my friends ordered a banana cake concoction...again a DIY plate, uneven slices of banana bread, (3 slices ) an ice cream scoop of a mascarpone cheese and another ingredient too in consequential to recall...side by side to assemble yourself. I enquired if the chef had gone home as the presentation of the desserts were so poor, this was met with amusement from the waitress and also the 'manager' ( smelling of his last cigarette) who was subsequently called to answer my enquiry after the bill had been presented along with the charge for the DIY desserts. Overall, in my humble opinion, overpriced for the food....too long a wait between courses, and extremely poor and ineffective response to a valid question from a customer. The dessert charge was removed from the bill, but after our question regarding the poor presentation of the desserts, and the hardly touched desserts, the charge should not have been applied in the first place......overall very disappointing.
