The name of Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant is inspired by La Motte’s admiration of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 – 1957). Pierneef’s adoration of the South African landscape and his appreciation of the country’s diversity are reflected in the restaurant’s focus on heritage cuisine and how it embraces cultural influences, ingredients and recipes. His European inspirations, exceptional creativity as well as pioneering efforts in the South African art environment, involving new techniques and various genres, also resonate with Pierneef à La Motte’s interpretation of the history of South African cuisine and its strive towards innovation in executing modern South African heritage cuisine.

Including wine and tip, this meal cost R600 per head. Offering hake(which we feed to our cats) and brisket as main course options, is ridiculous. None of my guests, nor I, could find anything good to say, except for the starter, which was novel. One of the party was a vegetarian and she was seriously underwhelmed by her main, which she did not finish. We would have had far better value from the normal menu. I will be writing to the organisers about the really poor value we received yesterday. what a pity, as the venue is excellent. It felt like a total rip-off.

We went for lunch and it’s a special lunch with mixed appetizers and a choice of mains and dessert. We set on the glass enclosed porch with a view of the beautiful pond and plantings, a lovely setting. The wines are very good and the service is excellent.
