Excellent and very enjoyable Mothers’ Day lunch at Prosopa on 10 May, with great attention and service from the owner, Dino, and Manager, Wesley. As usual, the food was of excellent quality. Thank you Dino and team!

The restaurant is cosy, elegant decor. The food was great, portion sizes just right, cocktails were delicious. Would definitely be back to try other things on the menu.

We have been to this restaurant numerous times over the years and this was the first occasion that it has been poor and standards are clearly slipping. Ordered a shared mezes meal of 5 courses. You judge a Greek restaurant on dolmades. These were small and straight from the fridge despite being told they would served hot. Ordered Spanish prawns and got snails instead. Remade in a hurry with rubbery prawns and a tasteless sauce. Service was poor. No management on site which was also a first. Bill with drinks was R600/head which is not value for poor quality. Used to be the best Greek restaurant in Pretoria. Shame this is no longer the case. Won’t be back.

Prosopa Restaurant responded on Sat 09 May 26:
Tony, this review is extremely disappointing, not because of the criticism itself, but because so much of it is simply inaccurate. Firstly, there absolutely was management on site. You were personally seated by our General Manager & Sommelier, Moses Magwaza, on arrival, and he attended to your table twice more during the evening after your food was served to ensure everything was in order. At no point was any complaint raised about the food, service or experience to him. To now state there was “no management on site” is simply false. Secondly, regarding the dolmades: your waiter incorrectly advised that they would be served hot. That was his mistake, and he had already been briefed that we are now serving them cold going forward. However, what is rather ironic is using dolmades as the benchmark of a Greek restaurant while ignoring the fact that most “Greek” restaurants in South Africa serve mass-produced tinned dolmades straight from a can, usually cold as well. Ours are handmade in-house from scratch using imported vine leaves. You are, of course, entitled not to prefer the serving temperature, but implying this reflects “slipping standards” is a stretch. It is also worth noting that despite the severity of the complaints now being raised, both the dolmades and the Spanish prawns were finished completely. In fact, nothing was sent back other than the initial concern regarding the prawns, which were immediately made for you. Your wife also appeared to thoroughly enjoy her evening. Unfortunately, from the moment menus were presented, it already seemed as though you had arrived determined to be dissatisfied, including dismissing the drinks list before fully looking through it and then questioning whether that was “all we had” despite being informed that our full beverage offering was contained within it. As for the prawns: you made no mention whatsoever that there was anything wrong with them when management checked on your table repeatedly. Also, prawns become rubbery from overcooking, not from being “made in a hurry,” so that statement makes little culinary sense. Then there is the issue of the bill. You claim you paid “R600 per head.” Your total bill was R939 excluding gratuity for two people and included two double Bushmills Black Bush whiskies (and mixers) and two ciders. That works out to less than R470 per person before tip, with premium alcohol included. Exaggerating the figures by nearly 30% to support a narrative about “poor value” is unfair and misleading to people reading this review. Finally, the comment about “standards slipping” is particularly odd considering Prosopa has been operating successfully for 21 years and has built its reputation precisely because we take standards seriously. Restaurants are not judged by whether every guest likes every single dish every single night — they are judged by consistency, integrity and how they handle guests. What we will not do, however, is quietly accept factually incorrect claims presented as truth. We genuinely would have preferred you raised these concerns honestly and directly while you were at the restaurant rather than rewriting the evening after the fact.
