We brought 13 family members to Root44 on Saturday afternoon for a special occasion. What should have been a celebration turned into one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had. What happened: Ordered at 16:15. Half the table received hot food at 16:40 (already lukewarm). Poke bowls and sushi arrived at 17:25—nearly 50 minutes later. Half our party had finished eating while the others waited. Zero communication. No one told us about delays. No alternatives offered. Poke bowls were unacceptable—as regular customers, we know what they should contain. These had minimal protein, minimal rice, just salad and onion. No carrot, beetroot, or edamame beans. No substance. Salmon roses (ordered as starter) were served ON A VEGAN SUSHI PLATTER. Completely inappropriate. The real problem: Management Manager Brian appeared only after our food finally arrived. Instead of solutions, we got excuses: "staff called in sick," "we've been struggling since 12pm," "we're only human." If your kitchen was failing since noon, why wasn't your 4pm shift briefed? Why weren't customers informed? Why were we given no options? Brian was defensive, rude, and slow to process our bill dispute. He tried to charge us for everything—we refused to pay for substandard poke bowls and delayed sushi (R600 removed from bill). He consulted the owner, who couldn't be bothered to speak with us. No service recovery. No accountability. No professionalism. The one bright spot: Coco, a server who actually cared and tried to help. To Root44: We were loyal customers who loved your venue. The way you handled this—or rather, failed to handle it—has completely destroyed that relationship. Basic expectation management and honest communication would have prevented all of this. To everyone else: Manage your expectations if you visit, especially for group bookings. What we experienced was a systematic failure of kitchen coordination, staff communication, and management accountability. Extremely disappointed doesn't b

Great spot to hang out with the family & great variety in the menu. Only thing that nearly spoiled our day was the faulty steak dishes we ordered. The team did replace them, however the manager on duty tried to convince us the meat was wet aged instead of the foul smelling, rotten pieces that were served to us. He wouldn’t listen to us nor smell the food, but kept insisting that the basting and wet aged process is what caused the odour.
