From the moment we were seated, it was clear that the evening’s brightest note would be struck not by the kitchen, but by our waiter, a gentleman aptly named Happy. His service was polished, attentive without intrusion, and delivered with a warmth that felt entirely genuine. In a dining room that grew steadily more chaotic as the night unfolded, he remained the picture of professionalism. Regrettably, the same cannot be said of the food. The opening act—deep-fried mushrooms—arrived with the hollow crunch and uniform texture that betray their freezer-aisle origins, lacking the earthy juiciness one hopes for in such a simple pleasure. The biltong slices fared marginally better: competent, agreeable, but hardly memorable. The main course proved the evening’s greatest disappointment. Two rump steaks were ordered medium rare, yet both arrived resolutely well done. One in particular was a pallid grey throughout, devoid of the succulence and character that define a properly handled cut. It was less a celebration of beef and more a study in overcooking. As the restaurant filled beyond what its modest proportions could gracefully accommodate, the atmosphere shifted from lively to overwhelming. The live music, rather than enhancing the experience, dominated it—conversation became a strained exercise rather than a pleasure. The final misstep came with the bill, which failed to account for the deposit already paid and omitted two drinks (which we had corrected). It was an administrative oversight that neatly mirrored the kitchen’s inattention to detail. In the end, while Happy’s service stood as a commendable highlight, it was not enough to redeem an evening marked by culinary disappointment and logistical missteps. Regrettably, this is not a table to which we will return.
