The Fat Fish – George

An oasis of calm in the heart of the George city centre, The Fat Fish, offers the exact same delightfully original menu as its sister restaurant in Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy the finest, sustainably caught, seafood, the freshest sushi as well as a wide range of other innovative dishes in a gem of a location.
The lush, beautifully landscaped garden complete with water features, outdoor BBQ and children’s play area, offers true respite on a hot Garden Route summers day. While the stylish, contemporary interior features a series of more intimate dining spaces on varying levels, with no less than three fireplaces, to cosy up to in the colder wet winter months. In addition, The Fontus, Special Events Room, is available for private celebrations and often plays host to carefully curated food and wine pairings.

The menu is predominantly seafood-based and perfectly complemented by an award-winning wine list, classic cocktails and extensive craft gin selection. Be sure to look out for their regular “From the Fire” al fresco feasts and Paella Specials out in the garden when the weather allows.

Having worked internationally for a number of years, chef patron Christo Nortier has returned home. As passionate as he is experienced, Christo is determined to offer Garden Route diners a true culinary experience and an opportunity to venture away from the conventional in beautiful surrounds.

    Last night our family of three had dinner at The Fat Fish George. We were attended to by Pedro, who was doing a great job. For starters we had salmon roses(good) and fashion sandwiches (average). For mains we had the hake and calamari combo (good), the whole sole (excellent) and oxtail and mash (good). We did not have any desserts as the main portions were quite substantial and a couple of cocktails(excellent) for drinks which were on special. The bill including tip came to R1400,00

    My husband had the parmesan kingklip. Myself batter hake and calamari. Followed by the cheesecake. Brilliant! Service was splendid

    I always enjoy eating the fat fish. The Mother’s Day experience was not so positive. There was a shortage of cutlery and crockery, and we had to eat our main meal out of side plates. The soup was delicious, but not enough. Main meal was cold, and I think “ too many” choices of dishes made it difficult to put forward a lovely meal. The desert was raw and cold. With everything said, I will definitely come back for a meal the fat fish! You only made mistakes this time, which I am sure you will not make again.

    We booked for mothersday and they offered a set menu. We waited long for our bread and starter to arrive at the table. The cauliflower soup was ice cold on arrival. We were extremely disappointed in the main course. It was served meze style 1 piece of chicken fillet for each a cinnamon cake and one bite literally of creamed spinach. The seafood curry was served in a bowl enough for 1. A portion for 1 which was to be served 3 ways as we were 3 people this was absolutely ridiculous! The worst part is we didn't even receive our apple crumble pie for dessert we were told its on its way and 1h30min later we were offered cheesecake instead which was thrown on our table as they said the apple crumble is not happening. Terrible planning from the restaurant side but how disappointing for a mothersday experience. I felt embarrassed for my wife and daughter and it was shameful. The entire experience ruined by bad quality food ridiculous portion sizes bad service overall as I had to ask for cutlery for serviettes and also ask for dishing spoons. The mains were also COLD on arrival. We have supported this place in the past but the quality has gone down recently to the extent that we haven't been back for the last 6 months and thought we'd try it again now for mothersday now we know why we stopped going there. There is no excuse for what happened there yesterday. My wife didn't receive her mothersday chocolate either I guess they ran out as well. For what we paid absolutely not worth it. And never again will we be back. This is our 2nd restaurant in George that we will never be visiting again.

    The Tagliatelle was very good but my rump was full of sinews. Took most of it home. The wine was ridiculously high priced. Will bring my own next time now that I know it is allowed. In general, not the same as our previous experiences.
