With Head Chef Ebie du Toit at the helm of day-to-day kitchen operations and Gray Chikwape directing the Front of House team, working alongside Dale Roberts and Pot Luck Club Group Head Chef Jason Kosmas, Jozi diners can look forward to the same much-loved menu of Asian-inspired small plates served in the new stylish restaurant space at The Peech.

Opened in November 2004, multi-award-winning boutique hotel The Peech has evolved into a contemporary Joburg destination over the years. Known for its afro-chic luxury decor and service, the property is spread across thirty-two rooms and suites surrounded by two acres of indigenous gardens.

Expect familiar favourites and exciting new dishes to be ordered as guests please and enjoyed as a small plate sharing experience for the whole table.

Gourmet Guide™ Description

Now, the bustling hub of Rosebank enjoys the energy and creative culinary flair that made its Cape Town counterpart so famous. The Pot Luck Club offers an experience that tantalises the senses, combining sophisticated flavours with a relaxed, contemporary atmosphere. The space is characterised by an edgy yet elegant design, with custom lighting that adds a touch of whimsy and artistic flair.

The extensive, eclectic menu features over 20 petite dishes that draw on global inspirations while celebrating local ingredients. The restaurant’s format encourages diners to mix and match to create their own culinary adventure. It’s ideal for Johannesburg diners who, as head Chef Ebie Du Toit notes, appreciate the freedom to choose their own dining pace and experience.

Among the standout dishes is the lobster taco, served with a smoky chipotle glaze, radish ceviche, and coriander mojo. Each bite is a seamless fusion of crispiness, zest, and the right amount of saltiness. Another must-try is the beef sirloin tartare, served with rich black garlic emulsion and a bright yuzu dressing, exemplifying their knack for balancing robust flavours with refined presentation. Vegetarians are not left out–choose the king oyster steak with black pepper cep au lait sauce and the beetroot tartare served with hoisin
dressing and ponzu mayo.

Firstly, the food was not bad, but it did not hold the expectation from one towards the brand. The biggest issue from me is the presentation of the food, while the plating was ok, it was difficult to move most of the food into my own plate (the four of us ordered the sharing menu), some of the dishes came with a highlight of broth at the bottom, however, it was both inconvenient and not hygienic to share liquid with your friends, it would be much nicer to divide some of the dishes into individual portions (eg. four tiny bowls). Other than the plating, I feel some of the dishes used too much salt or spice, but that could just be my personal preference.

The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg responded on Thu 10 Jul 25:
Thank you for your feedback. The Pot Luck Club dining experience is largely inspired by the flavours and informal style of enjoying a meal in South East Asia, where chef Luke Dale Roberts spent many of his formative years. This interactive way of sharing a meal is perhaps what makes Pot Luck Club so unique, with diners able to taste a variety of small plates across different flavour profiles. Each space is preset with cutlery and a set of chop sticks, so guests can serve themselves and eat using separate utensils, and our waiters are always happy to provide more cutlery that guests feel comfortable taking their portion from a shared plate. Sorry that this dining experience was not for you! If you would like to join us again in future, our Chef will be very happy to plate your food separately.

The evening was impacted by a large table of 20+ patrons that was extremely loud, so much so that it was difficult to enjoy ourselves and have a normal conversation. Not entirely the ambience we expected. But nonetheless, the food and service was fantastic.

The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg responded on Mon 07 Jul 25:
Dear Cristoph, We sincerely apologise that your dining experience with us was spoiled by the large group who overwhelmed our dining space on Friday evening. We usually restrict party size (max 6-8 pax) and position a larger table to one side of our restaurant so that they are not the centre of our dining space. We shall address your complaint with our Management with urgency to ensure we avoid this situation and resulting disappointment for the rest of our guests in future. Our GM will contact you directly regarding your underwhelming experience.

We had the lightly loaded menu. Wonderfully diverse choices and every bite was incredibly tasty. Well done to the chef and team. Front-of-house staff are also amazing. We will be back with friends and family.
