Curated for the curious and creative… Upper Union opened its doors in the Kloof Street Neighbourhood.

Gourmet Guide™ Description

It’s the talk of the town. Set in a beautiful heritage building on, you guessed it, Upper Union Street, chef Amori Burger has firmly cemented herself on the Cape culinary landscape since opening. The stylish green interiors offer myriad cosy corners where you can enjoy convivial dining under twinkling chandeliers—an ambience that paves the way for an unforgettable food-and-drinks ride.

Sit indoors, outdoors, upstairs, or down to enjoy some zesty cocktails composed by master mixologists. The wine list reflects local, smallscale, and boutique wines. Unsure of what to order? Trust the serving team to cover your table with an array of truly delectable dishes. The
menu is divided into small plates or a shared menu of either ‘pasture’ or ‘garden’, both starting with a hot bread course that warns you of chef Amori’s heartfelt sense of generosity. Creative and curious, she loves connecting with equally insatiable guests as they comment with
delight on her dishes. Favourites include the beef picanha with Fati blommaki and nasturtium chimichurri, the Puglia burrata with fennel jam, prosciutto, Dijon, and sesame flatbread, and the salt-baked beetroot, but there’s always something new and novel. She crafts her own paneer, pickles, and dressings with zeal. Her latest lamb dish with kapokbos chermoula, red pimento, and parsnip purrée is a must-try. Be sure to keep space for desserts and cheese.

Upper Union epitomises convivial, upper-class dining–stellar food served without unnecessary fuss.

We were absolutely blown away with everything. The staff was incredible, the food was fantastic and place just nailed it. We were visiting Cape Town for holiday and the dinner was one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

The wait staff was friendly. It was a set menu. None of the food was hot - some of it was cold when it got to the table. For a fine dining restaurant, it was not a fine dining experience. The main course, a tomahawk steak, was tough. There was an “event” going on upstairs which may have strained their resources. The restaurant is in an old house, beautifully decorated.

The food was great but sadly served on warm plates not hot and the food on the tasting plates got cold quickly. On arrival the waiter told the table of 9 about their"house wine" both a bottle of white and one red. We tried both and ordered 4 bottles. When the bill arrived we were surprised to note the "house wine" was R900 per bottle. More than double the price of good South African wines on their menu. We all felt this was an underhanded way of pushing up the bill and should have been disclosed by the waiter. A house wine is never one of the more expensive bottles on the wine list. A lovely afternoon tainted by this one act.
