Urbanologi is located at the 1 Fox Precinct in Ferreirasdorp , the oldest part of town and the heart of Johannesburg. Based inside the Mad Giant Brewery, Urbanologi works side by side with the brewery team brainstorming and testing new ideas in search of new flavours, ingredients, processes and techniques. The essence of our food comes from using the highest quality of fresh Asian and local ingredients while harnessing the character of street food with an Avant Garde thought process. In keeping with the philosophy of our cuisine and to create a space that celebrates creative thinking, we have collaborated with local artisanal designers:

Gourmet Guide Description

STYLISH STREET FOOD Urbanologi is a vibey, urban space in a state-of-the-art craft brewery in downtown Joburg where the industrial setting provides the backdrop for exceptional cuisine. Dont expect traditional tapas – Urbanologi is more about small ‘Asian fusion plates. Chef Jack Coetzee is a wizard at combining ingredients for maximum impact. Although hes always loved cooking and trained as a chef, Jack says his eyes were really opened when he worked with Luke Dale Roberts at The Test Kitchen. His creativity is evident on his multi-pronged menu – offering raw, cured, steamed, fried, or wood-fired Kushiyaki. The idea is to keep it simple but source incredible ingredients. Its recommended that two people share five plates, but youll want to taste them all. Jacks favourite technique is cooking on coals – coal-fired broccoli with smoked gorgonzola, or spider steak with passion fruit, labneh and sunflower shoots. Other highlights include poached sweet potato with a goats cheese yoghurt mousse, steamed brioche with smoked chicken fat and dukkha spice and yakatori chicken with chimichurri. Finish with a veggie-inspired dessert like butternut semifreddo with pancetta honeycomb and poached apple. Jacks passionate about finding ingredients that arent perfect or desirable because they force him out of his comfort zone. Taste leek roots that were being tossed by the farmer, served tempura. On the drinks menu – beer, freshly brewed – and a small selection of wines served in carafes or a bottle. “We want people to experience fine dining flavours without paying a premium.” Chef Jack Coetzee

    There was no toilet paper in the toilets. The food and service was really good. Would recommend the venue.

    The food was outstanding. The place was a little empty due to the recent violence in Johannesburg but the food is worth it. Hopefully the area bounces back so that people get to enjoy the.ambience and great food at this venue without any worries. The staff were very courteous and friendly and made sure we got an Uber home.
